I recently shared with you that COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide. While that’s of course still true, I’m so encouraged to see the clinical community coming together to make progress and address this startling statistic. Leading experts Prof. Frederik Trinkmann and Prof. Chris Gale recently authored a piece in BMJ advocating for proactive and timely interventions to address cardiopulmonary risk and prevent exacerbations. The article highlights how COPD patients face higher risks of both lung and heart events, and that this elevated cardiopulmonary risk can persist for up to a year following an exacerbation. It’s clear that more proactive and preventative COPD care is urgently needed. At AstraZeneca, we’re advancing the science to create a deeper understanding of cardiopulmonary risk in COPD, working to transform outcomes and reduce the risk of premature death for the millions worldwide living with COPD. It is estimated that COPD affects 391 million people worldwide (using GOLD definition of COPD)¹—that’s equivalent to the population of 47 New York Cities or 44 Londons, 10 Tokyos, or 28 Rio De Janeiros. Yet despite its massive impact, COPD often continues to be under prioritised, underfunded, and undertreated across healthcare systems globally. This #WorldCOPDDay, we are urging healthcare providers and policymakers to take decisive action by implementing standardised quality measures for COPD diagnosis and management. Consistent care is a core element in improving patient outcomes and ensuring that everyone, regardless of location, age, gender, or economic background, has access to the right care plan and support. At AstraZeneca Ireland, we are proud to Speak Up for COPD by supporting COPD Support Ireland and its plans to highlight the importance of World COPD Day. These include a ‘COPD & Me’ roadshow offering free spirometry tests across five Irish cities. In Ireland it is estimated that 380,000 people are living with COPD yet only 110,000 are diagnosed². Join us in the movement to empower patients, advocate for change, and act to improve care. Over 11.7 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Education and support are essential to living well with COPD and @AstraZeneca is teaming up with the @American Lung Association (ALA) on the “Learning to Live with COPD” campaign to improve life quality for those managing the disease. This initiative provides education on treatment options and introduces a COPD-focused health navigator via ALA’s Lung HelpLine. A free webinar on November 20 will feature a COPD expert and a patient, fostering open dialogue between patients and healthcare providers. The campaign prioritizes women, low-income, and rural communities—groups disproportionately affected by COPD and facing healthcare access challenges. AstraZeneca’s COPD drug Breztri Aerosphere is climbing in sales, and with ongoing studies exploring new treatment possibilities, the focus on lung health continues. We asked for better care. WE WERE HEARD! 💜🩵💙 The COPD Foundation along with NTM Info & Research has launched the Bronchiectasis and NTM Care Center Network (CCN), a major initiative aimed at improving care for individuals with bronchiectasis and nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease. This network will be established across 150 US medical centers over three years. The CCN aims to accelerate diagnosis, provide high-quality care, educate healthcare teams, support research and clinical trials, and enhance patient education and engagement. According to Christina Hunt, BS, RRT, Senior Director of Bronchiectasis and NTM Education and Care Delivery: “The Bronchiectasis and NTM Care Center Network (CCN) has completed its first application review period and is pleased to report that 33 sites have been invited to join the CCN. The selection process was highly competitive! An official announcement with the list of designated centers will be published in December 2024. The Care Center Network is looking forward to its next Request for Applications period anticipated for February 2025. They hope to receive applications from additional sites from around the country and centers that wish to reapply. We are so thrilled that the CCN is becoming a reality!” It is my hope that this model will be used worldwide. Stay the course with self-care.
