What does it mean when we say we ‘crave’ connection in our relationships? Does this relate to your physical connection, emotional connection, or quality time? Or is what we really crave attunement in our relationship? In the context of relationships, attunement involves being truly present and in tune with your partner, similar to empathy. When we are emotionally in tune with our partner, we are better able to deeply understand and even feel our partners emotions. So, now the real question is, how do we reach emotional attunement? One actionable step you can take towards attunement today is the practice of active listening. When you are talking with your partner about deeper issues, do they have your full attention or are you multi-tasking? As your partner is speaking, are you truly listening to what they are saying, or are you thinking about your response? When you respond, are you supporting your partner or are you telling them what to do differently? When we practice active listening, aim to go into these conversations with the mindset of ‘seek to understand rather than to be understood’. Listen to what your partner is saying, reflect back the emotions you hear and sense, help your partner feel seen and heard, validate their experience.
