Automated driving introduces the potential for drivers to engage in Non-Driving Related Activities (#NDRA), such as reading or working on a laptop. However, these NDRAs present challenges when the driver needs to quickly regain control of the vehicle. At the 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, Thirumanikandan Subramanian from Institut für Konstruktionstechnik und Technisches Design (IKTD) - Universität Stuttgart will present an innovative Mixed Reality Driving Simulator (#MRDS) approach that addresses this issue by allowing user-centric studies of NDRAs in automated cars.
By leveraging game engines like #UnrealEngine and mixed reality techniques such as Chroma Keying, MRDS immerses users in a simulated environment where they can interact with real objects, enhancing both realism and usability. This approach enables testing of diverse scenarios, such as varying weather, time of day, and traffic intensity, to evaluate drivers' transition times, seating impacts, NDRA complexity, and response to takeover cues.
Don't miss this opportunity to see how MRDS is driving forward research on human-centered design for automated vehicle interiors.
