What you do today lays the foundation for tomorrow. Over the years, I've embraced various roles: River Guide, EMT, Airman, Firefighter, and, more recently, Consultant. However, the role that surprises people most is Farrier. Each title has equipped me with unique skills that paved the way for the next, yet none has prepared me for consulting as much as being a farrier. As a farrier, I learned not only how to interact with clients but also how to manage their expectations and resolve conflicts. I learned about business development and client retention. These experiences were invaluable, helping me cultivate skills that have proven essential in my consulting career. At first glance, shoeing horses may seem worlds apart from consulting and business. However, the soft skills I honed and some more tangible skills prepared me better than anything else for the challenges and opportunities in the corporate world. Ultimately, I gave up my business to return to school. Years after I shut the business down, I knew I had run a successful operation when I received calls and inquiries for work. Are you facing labor challenges at your FBO? I have been blessed with some of the best people in the business at X-1FBO Software! It is an enviable position, especially considering how challenging it has been for our FBO friends when it comes to hiring for Line and Customer Service. It is why one of the topics we are dedicating a lot of time to at the NATA- National Air Transportation Association FBO Success Seminar is how to meet those challenges. Remember when it was a cool job at the airport, and we had people that just wanted to be at an FBO? We hired people that just had that passion for aviation that drew many of us into this career. It led so many of us to become tech company CEOs😁, Pilots, GM's, FBO owners and a ton of other aviation career options! In fact, if you started as a LST or a CSR, and made a career out of this business, comment on the post!!! I used to always do interviews with the interviewee facing the ramp. I wanted them to not pay attention to me and instead start watching the airplanes. If they did, I knew I had someone I could train. That is much harder to find these days, we face a very different set of circumstances, different candidates. High turnover rates and a competitive job market has made finding and keeping a reliable team tougher than ever. We’re all feeling the pressure to attract and retain talent. Kyle Eiserer with Airside FBO, LLC and I will be diving deep into the strategies that can help us understand and navigate these labor challenges, from sourcing entry level talent on the Line and in Customer Service to improving employee engagement to creating a culture that people (we are dealing with different generations with very different expectations) want to be a part of. "Celebrating the Tugboats Behind Every Star Performer & Team" Every team has its Stars — the ones smashing targets by 3x-5x, standing out in group photos, or escorting CEOs and guests on high-profile visits. Their achievements naturally draw admiration and applause. But behind every Star, there’s an unseen force—a team of steady, dependable contributors. These individuals, like silent guardians, ensure tasks are completed with precision and on time. They don’t seek the spotlight, rarely demand recognition, and often share or deflect the credit when it comes their way. Yet, they are the strong shoulders that carry the Star to success, only to step back into the shadows afterward. A while ago, I came across a beautiful analogy comparing these contributors to 'Tugboats' — small but mighty vessels that help massive ships navigate safely in and out of ports. They may not have the glamour of yachts or the imposing presence of giant ships, but their role is indispensable. As HR professionals, we must identify and value these 'Tugboats' in our organizations. Their needs may be modest, but attending to them and keeping them motivated ensures that the foundation of our teams remains solid. After all, when the designer yachts sail away, it’s the tugboats that stay and keep the harbor running. Explain I am a Manufacturing Production Associate and I build seats for buses and trains. How long have you been with United Safety? Almost a year. How has your career grown with the company? I have built leadership skills and relationships with my colleagues. I practice dedication and commitment to the work I do. What does United Safety's culture mean to you? I am grateful to be part of a company with such great culture. It truly feels like a big family where I feel safe to be myself. Why do you love working for United Safety? I like the precision required in this line of work and in building certain things. I enjoy the rush that comes with my work and having the capacity to build a certain amount of seats to complete an order.
