Starting life as the Fresh Olive Company, when George decided to bring olives back from a French farmer’s market, part of our mission has been to challenge convention. Now thirty years on, we are seeing if we can grow olives in the UK. Looking forward to the next thirty years, with many similarities to the wine industry, olive groves could rival vineyards across the UK with British Olive Oil. While British olives will never replace the varieties grown on the continent, there is opportunity to introduce new varieties to a new geography where the climate is increasingly meeting the required conditions for growing a successful crop. British olives are a great demonstration of adaptation to climate change and strengthening supply chain resilience. With unpredictable changes to weather & climate only increasing across Europe, added strains and pressures are being placed on our suppliers that rely on their fresh produce. With changes to rainfall, drier summers, wetter winters and early frosts; yields are impacted. The need for food systems thinking has never been more pronounced. Krill: A small solution to big global challenges - reflections from the Clinton Global Initiative 2024 President Bill Clinton led our roundtable discussion on the world's most urgent challenges at Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting. I used this opportunity to highlight the crucial role seafood, especially krill, can play in addressing these issues. 🦐 Negative and often misleading views about seafood seem to dominate today's discourse. Yet, policymakers and global leaders must listen to the facts. At Aker BioMarine ASA, we harvest around 350,000 tons of krill annually—well within the conservative 1% quota. Science tells us that this could sustainably be increased to 1.5 million tons, making it the fifth largest and still most sustainable fishery in the world🌊 What does this mean? More healthy food on the table and a critical contribution toward a sustainable future. Krill and other seafood have a significantly lower CO2 footprint than land-based foods. Increasing seafood consumption could be one of the most effective ways to help meet the targets of the Paris Agreement. It's time we shift the conversation. Recently read a great NYT article about the hidden environmental costs of food. We would probably all riot(or cry) if we had to pay double the current price for supermarket chicken. But maybe understanding the data behind the suggestion would help ease the torches and pitchforks. The True Price initiative aims to increase the awareness of the hidden environmental cost of food and agricultural production. Though low food prices have benefits, including affordability for low-income people, for those who have the capability to consider lowering their food’s footprint, understanding the backend environmental impact of the food system could be very useful, right? We pay these extra costs anyway- “the healthcare system, climate adaptation mechanisms etc” At face value, the idea to prevent and not treat these food system issues sounds like a wonderful idea 🤠 🍫 🍫 🍫 If we bring this full circle, we can apply this directly to the chocolate industry. We’ve all become accustomed to the 10kr chocolate bar, and understanding the planetary impact of cacao and its production requirements, this is 🍌 BA-NA-NAS 🍌 . Most players mitigate these issues with all the cost-cutting methods we’ve detailed many times before. Can understanding the hidden costs of our food also help drive the entire value chain to consider more sustainable methods of production?
