The GSI is a global leadership initiative focused on making significant progress on sustainability for farmed salmon.

Om oss

The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) is a leadership initiative established in 2013 by global farmed salmon producers, focused on making significant progress on the three pillars of sustainability – environmental, social and economic. Today, the GSI comprises 15 companies – representing approximately 50% of the global farmed salmon industry – that are fully committed to realizing a shared goal of providing a highly sustainable source of healthy protein to feed a growing global population, whilst minimizing environmental footprint, and continuing to improve social contribution. GSI member companies are Australis Seafoods S.A.; Bakkafrost; Blumar; Cermaq; Compañía Pesquera Camanchaca; Empresas AquaChile; Grieg Seafood ASA; Huon Aquaculture; Los Fiordos; Marine Harvest; Multiexport Foods S.A.; New Zealand King Salmon; Nova Sea AS; Tassal; and Ventisqueros. The GSI also has a number of Associate Members in both the pharmaceutical and feed industries, including Benchmark Holdings plc; BioMar; Cargill; Elanco; Merck, Sharpe and Dohme (MSD) Animal Health; PHARMAQ; Salmofood; and Skretting.

Last week, COP29 Azerbaijan concluded amidst disagreement between low- and high-income countries on climate finance goals. Despite the urgency of the climate crisis, the lack of consensus and actionable commitments served as a stark reminder of the challenges we face in addressing climate change.   Despite this, there were a few bright spots. The second-annual Food, Water, and Agriculture Day highlighted several new initiatives aimed at transforming agrifood systems to address sustainability, resilience, and food security. Among these, the Baku Harmoniya Climate Initiative for Farmers was announced as a platform to unify disparate programs and partnerships, fostering improved collaboration between food systems stakeholders.   As an advocate for collaboration and evidence-based knowledge sharing, we’re eager to see how this initiative can better promote the exchange of best practices to improve the lives of farmers.   #COP29 #ClimateAction #Collaboration   Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dgNzbn6M

  • Why do GSI members choose pre-competitive collaboration for sustainability improvements?     Collaboration is essential for transforming food systems, and it’s central to our GSI mission. Like many industries, we face significant challenges due to climate change.     Our way of collaboration allows GSI members to drive advancements in sustainability, transparency, and innovation at greater speed and scale than if working alone.    Learn how our collective efforts create impactful change in this case study by World Wildlife Fund.     For more GSI case studies, visit: https://lnkd.in/eh4a5rSW

While progress on climate negotiations during the first week of COP29 Azerbaijan have been slow, tomorrow is Food, Agriculture and Water Day, where FAO will launch the Baku Harmoniva Climate Initiative to help farmers adapt to climate change and enhance agrifood system resilience and sustainability.     It focuses on three core principles:   🔷Enhancing collaboration and the exchange of knowledge   🔷Making agrifood systems investments more attractive  🔷Supporting climate-resilient communities, particularly rural areas, as well as women and young farmers    These principles resonate deeply with our GSI mission. While farmers are at the forefront of adapting to climate change, businesses have a responsibility to help facilitate action. By actively participating in these efforts, businesses can help create a food system that benefits both people and planet.     https://lnkd.in/eGFFmTws

  • Say hello to the GSI network 👋. This month we’d like to highlight Jorge Díaz.   Jorge is the Sustainability Director at Skretting – one of four feed suppliers that make up GSI’s associate members. Skretting supplies aquaculture feed for several species, including farmed salmon.   An essential part of Jorge’s role is focused on identifying, understanding, and mitigating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks, and he has been integral to the development and launch of GSI’s ESG Feed Risk Assessment Tool.   He shares: “To drive the necessary improvements in Skretting's supply chain, it is important to know where we are starting from. For that, we need full traceability across all aspects of our footprint - from GHG emissions to water quality and social impact. This is the goal of the ESG Feed Risk Assessment Tool, to help us better understand what we know and what we don’t know about our supply chain, and identify where progress can happen. It is this high-impact project that makes GSI so crucial, it creates an enabling environment for best-practice sharing, collaboration, and innovation for environmental and social improvements across the whole aquaculture supply chain.   Like this post to show your support for Jorge, for ensuring GSI salmon is raised to be better for people and planet.   #aquaculture #sustainability #salmonfarming #sustainablefoodsystems #foodsystems #salmon

  • Global nutrition experts recommend eating oily fish due to their high omega-3 content – but what are omega-3s and how do they contribute to health? Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA found in aquatic foods like farmed salmon, are known for their powerful anti-inflammatory properties. These nutrients can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and also support brain health and function, eye health, and fetal development. Since our bodies can't efficiently produce EPA and DHA on their own, incorporating foods rich in omega-3s is a good way to ensure you're getting these vital nutrients. • What can the aquaculture sector do to help achieve SDG2 – Zero Hunger? At COP28 last year, FAO introduced a roadmap to transform food systems, essential for achieving SDG2 while staying within the 1.5°C climate threshold. This roadmap highlights fisheries and aquaculture as a domain of action, advocating for a blue transformation through increased aquaculture productivity, equitable resource access, and innovative technologies. These initiatives align with our efforts as GSI. Our members collaborate to share insights and best practices, driving sustainable improvements within their operations and across the sector. We look forward to COP29 Azerbaijan, where FAO is expected to unveil the second part of their roadmap. Read more below.

  • How and what we feed our fish is crucial to the efficiency and sustainability of salmon farming, and is constantly evolving as new technology, research and knowledge comes to light. Here are a few ways our members reduce the environmental and social impacts of feed. While progress has been made over the past decade, we're continuing improve responsible sourcing and reduce our footprint even further. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gSEHWvRX

  • Climate change is posing challenges to all those involved in the food system. Within the aquaculture industry, we’re constantly adapting and developing technologies to address these changes. We collaborate with academic experts like Lynne Falconer from the University of Stirling to help us better understand, prepare and mitigate the impacts of a changing climate and build greater resiliency. Here’s what Lynne has to say about our collaboration. #ClimateAdaptation #Research

  • At COP28, the UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action united more than 150 nations in a commitment to transform global food systems. As we look ahead to COP29, the focus shifts from declaring to mobilizing action. Collaboration, innovation, and data are needed to turn these commitments into a reality, and everyone has a role to play. In a recent Ted Talk, Gonzalo Muñoz Abogabir CMG, spoke about the UAE Declaration and shared how governments and the private sector can work together to accelerate progress on climate goals. https://lnkd.in/eF-8jibe #COP29 #ClimateAction #FoodSystems
