🚀 Excited to Announce! I'm thrilled to share that our latest article, "Multi‑Pollutant Water Quality Trading: A Conditional Approach for Groundwater Quality Management", has been published! 🌊 In this study, we explored how water quality trading (WQT) can effectively reduce groundwater nitrate and chloride levels, balancing economic and environmental goals. Using MODFLOW and MT3DMs, we evaluated 12 scenarios and identified optimal strategies that maximize benefits for both polluters and water managers. I’m incredibly grateful to my co-authors Shervin Jamshidi (MSc Supervisor) and hamid kardan (Advisor) for their collaboration and support. Happy to share that the first part of my #PFAS journey is published in STOTEN! We designed a framework to estimate PFAS loads in municipal sewers, and in the process, discovered some remarkable trends, such as the discrepancy between expected results for different PFAS, especially the "phased out" #PFOS which is still dominant in #wastewater. We also see the heterogeneity of influences that contribute to the overall load such as #apparel , #stormwater runoff and many more. Give it a read! https://lnkd.in/gnnt7sVv CAGWCC has proposed additional clamp-on meters that would increase taxpayer costs, duplicate current metering efforts and provide less reliable data. State regulatory agencies like DEQ and EPA do not install their own equipment onto regulated industries’ systems. But why would CAGWCC propose additional meters? Perhaps it’s because in 2021, CAGWCC purchased 300 meters for $10 million to install on businesses — regardless of whether those businesses were metering water use with internal, accurate systems. These meters — purchased from Sustainability Partners without undergoing the required procurement process — need to find a home.

🔍 Making Decisions Under Deep Uncertainty: Insights from the Hydroinformatics Knowledge Exchange   Uncertainty affects decision-making at all levels in the drinking water sector, from operational to strategic. During a Hydroinformatics knowledge exchange, organized by Waterwise, experts explored the concept of uncertainty and discussed frameworks, methods, and tools to address it effectively.   💡 Peter van Thienen (KWR) explained the four levels of uncertainty between full certainty and complete ignorance, and the continuity bias.    💡 David Gold (Utrecht University) demonstrated the use of exploratory modeling and scenario discovery to stress-test strategies and identify factors critical to achieving desired outcomes.   💡 Joeri Willet (KWR) highlighted how DMDU methods (decision-making under deep uncertainty) can guide the drinking water sector in crafting adaptive and robust strategies.   👉 Curious to learn more about the discussions and insights? Tomorrow, Nov. 19th, join The Water Research Foundation (WRF) for the final installment of the “Transforming Aeration Energy in Water Resource Recovery Facilities through Suboxic Nitrogen Removal” webcast series. In this session, Carollo’s Michelle Young, PhD, Lead Technologist in Wastewater Treatment along with other experts from the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts will present key findings from a full-scale demonstration at the Pomona Water Reclamation Plant (PWRP). This innovative project at PWRP has achieved remarkable results—reducing aeration energy consumption from 1400 kWh/MG to 600 kWh/MG by transitioning from an average dissolved oxygen (DO) level of 2.0 mg/L to 0.8 mg/L, all while maintaining effective nitrification. These insights are vital for water resource facilities nationwide facing budget challenges, sustainability targets, and tighter nutrient regulations.
