Marcel works with over a hundred police and first responder agencies in Texas guiding learning about emotional literacy and regulation. We all need these skills, but for those with the responsibility to find a path through often challenging situations, they are critical. "Dignity in Policing" is a book, but it is much more than that. It is an organization committed to elevating dignity as a driving force in our culture and communities. When we live in dignity we naturally extend dignity to others. Sharing more about the broad categories of policing we evaluate, as well as the specific Measures that fall under each of those areas. Police Dimension: Trust, Legitimacy, and Community Engagement. Police are often the first responders and the main point of contact for the public—whether it’s for directions, reporting issues, or dealing with crime. Building community trust is essential for them to do their job effectively - to earn that trust, police must engage with the community respectfully and display fair and equitable attitudes in their interactions with the public. The lecture examines how policing has been utilized as a tool to maintain social order, often reinforcing the interests of the ruling class. I discuss the origins of modern policing in the context of industrialization, highlighting how economic changes necessitated new forms of social control. The talk also touches upon the disproportionate impact of policing on marginalized communities, illustrating the systemic biases ingrained in law enforcement practices. There's a nice white paper out from the University of Maryland's Violence Reduction Center today on LEO and CVI violence reduction strategies. In particular, there's some really helpful discussion of mission creep problems in CVI and hot spot policing. Mission creep makes tons of sense: people want to scale up an effective strategy, and local politicians want more policing and violence reduction in the neighborhoods they represent because anything more than zero is too much. Yet if you treat the whole city like a hot spot and every single member of a poor neighborhood as high-risk, strategies that depend on intensive interventions will get swamped and look like they've failed. Massive lists of gang/crew members and designating large swathes of the downtown as "drug free zones" all fail the dynamic intensive ideal--and become just another crackdown that destroys trust. "When CVPAs become overbroad, they lose effectiveness and can even cause harm by serving as a justification for excessive enforcement action."
