When it comes to cooking Christmas dinner and other festive treats, there is a simple way that you can help the environment and save yourself a few pennies too. 🍗 Pouring leftover fats down the sink can solidify in cold pipes, blocking up your drain and collectively form a ‘fatberg’ 😬. As cooking fats are non-biodegradable, this can eventually contribute to water pollution - not to mention a potential hefty plumbing bill come January. To remedy this, it is recommended that you put your leftover fats into a separate container and dispose of it in the bin once it has cooled. ✅ #CSGManagingWaste #ManagingWaste #Christmas #CookingFats #Waste #WasteManagement #RecyclingCentre #Kent #KentRecycling #Community

Washing fat, oil and grease down the sink is the cause of most blockages across the region, especially during the festive period. When hot fat or cooking oil is tipped down the sink it prevents flows of sewage and can lead to fatbergs forming. These blockages can result in people being unable to flush their toilets and, in extreme cases, can cause sewage escapes that spill into houses and gardens. Yorkshire Water spends more than £750,000 every year responding to blockages caused in this way. How to avoid blockages: Allow cooking oil to cool and solidify, then scoop it up and throw it in the bin Pour used cooking oil and fat into a container ready to use again. Freeze any leftover gravy in a container. If there's only a small amount of gravy left, soak it up in kitchen roll and throw it in the bin. Use a sink strainer to catch any bits of food waste and solids before they get into the pipes. What are your top tips for dealing with hot fat? #environment #sustainability #waste #nature #education #reduce #fatbergs #regenerative

This is the new garburator that was installed yesterday. Pros of Garburator -Convenience Cleaning dishes is made a lot simpler when you have a garbage disposal. Just rinse remaining food waste off in the sink and let the garburator grind it up and send it down the drain. -Less Trash When you have a garburator installed in your home you can rinse soft food waste off in the sink instead of putting it in the trash. This also helps with odors in your home as you do not have food waste in your garbage or composting bin rotting and creating unpleasant smells in your home. -Sanitary Putting food scraps into the garburator is one of the cleanest ways to dispose of food waste. It also is a solution for people who often quickly run out of room in their trash can or composting bin. In this hot weather bees 🐝 fan outside the hive entrance for a couple of important reasons: * Ventilation and temperature control: By rapidly vibrating their wings, bees create airflow through the hive, which helps to circulate fresh air and regulate temperature inside. This is especially crucial during hot weather when bees need to cool down the hive to keep the brood nest at an optimal temperature for raising young bees. * Dehumidifying nectar: Honeybees collect nectar, a sugary liquid from flowers, which has a high water content. To convert nectar into honey, bees need to reduce its moisture content. Fanning helps to evaporate excess water from the nectar, turning it into the thick, viscous honey we know and love. #heat #hot #ventilation #regulate #beekeeping #bees #ongarhoney

Erik M. - Thank you for posting about this :-). As you pointed out they are not composters and do not make compost but they do have a place in the foodwaste to resource value chain. They lack microbiology (whatever you put in will get cooked and dehydrated by the time the process is over). In composting microbiology creates the heat. In dehydrators, electricity (likely sourced from coal) creates heat and kills any added microbes pretty quickly. The marketing for the majority of these is greenwashing. The last thing our industry needs is for people to have a bad experience with a product they think is compost after using it on their house plants and garden. I'd love to find one named for what it is "Food Waste Dehydrator". In a dense population where food waste recycling is mandatory and compost facilities have figured out how to work with dehydrated food waste, they could have real value. I believe Mill is working with local composters in a variety of regions for just this purpose. I remain troubled by one more electrical appliance in the house using coal unless you happen to have chosen to purchase renewable energy through your provider. My question for anyone who might have an answer: Does the reduction in fuel emissions from the transport of dehydrated food waste as opposed to wet food waste zero out the emissions caused by their production and use?

Growing up in Ohio my parents maintained a 2 acre garden. Every August we would do a canning marathon of tomatoes and beans. We would shell corn for the freezer and also freeze peas. Our natural gas bill in August was higher than our heating bill in the middle of winter - from running our kitchen stove full tilt. The result was lots of garden grown veggies to get us through the winter. The practice helped us financially but also resulted in less demand on the food system. Food preservation can also reduce food waste by slowing down/stopping the natural degradation of food. Are you into canning? This is a pic of pickles I used to make in a small NYC apartment. #makecompostmainstream

🌱 Day 21 of 30: Let’s Talk Compost So what does feeding a Box of Life look like? This is a video submitted to us by Alycia, a new worm momma who shows us how she feeds her wormies. She collects her food scraps in a container, and chops it up into small chunks. (My suggestion is to chop scraps during meal prep before adding it to the container) Next, she digs a hole in wormy ecosystem, places the food in there, and covers it all up. A really important step to prevent flies and unwanted smells. Lastly she adds some wet bedding to balance out the food she’s added. This is a step most people don’t do when feeding a worm bin or composter which eventually leads to anaerobic conditions and muddy compost. You notice how neat and clean everything is right? I’ve learnt a lot about make good compost at home and I share that with folks. It makes composting almost like a ritual and show you how to do it in a much nicer way than you’d imagine. #MakeCompostingMainstream #Vermicomposting

Today, I forgot to bring a clip while picking up trash, so I had to use a small bag over my hands instead. Despite the inconvenience and the heat, I managed to collect a whole bag of garbage in 30 minutes. The trash included mineral water bottles, masks, empty bottles, paper towels, diapers, Coke bottles, cigarette butts, snack bags, and bread bags. I noticed many people throw expired bread into the lake to entertain their children, thinking it's food for the fish. This practice not only pollutes the water but also disrupts the entire ecosystem, affecting all aquatic life. Feeding bread to fish has been a common practice for a long time, especially in parks and ponds. I wonder why people don't give fish appropriate food instead of things they don't need. Afterward, they discard the empty bread bags, which monkeys often retrieve from trash cans, scattering them and creating more litter. I hope to raise awareness about maintaining a clean and healthy environment. Today, I was a plogger, and I hope more people become vigilant about preserving our surroundings.
