🌍 International Day of Peace 2024: "Cultivating a Culture of Peace" 🌿 Established by the United Nations in 1981, the International Day of Peace is observed annually on September 21st. This day calls on all nations and people to pause hostilities and work together to promote understanding, tolerance, and nonviolence. This year’s theme, "Cultivating a Culture of Peace," reminds us that peace is not just the absence of conflict but an ongoing effort to build inclusive societies, ensure justice, and foster empathy and dialogue. In Nepal, where we have experienced conflict and peacebuilding, the need to cultivate peace is more relevant than ever. Peace Brigades International Nepal calls on all members of society—government, civil society, and individuals—to continue supporting marginalized communities, strengthening human rights, and empowering youth and women to lead peace efforts. Sustainable peace is a shared responsibility, and we must all nurture it. Today, let’s recommit to creating a culture of peace in our daily lives. Let’s act compassionately, seek dialogue over division, and work together for a more just and peaceful Nepal. This paper analyzes the roles and positioning of Somali women in state and civil society institutions that may be active in conflict prevention and other peacebuilding processes. In the absence of any functioning peacebuilding structures and while the conflict continued, activities for peace were entirely outside normal social and state spheres. Women are active peacemakers and play many informal roles in peace processes, but they are generally absent from top-level peace negotiations and more formal institutions It is a unique manual that will be very helpful to you if you are working for peace in Somalia. #PromotingPeace: The International Day of Non-Violence On this #InternationalDayofNonViolence, observed each year on October 2nd to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, we are reminded of the power of non-violence as a means to achieve peace, justice, and human dignity. This day encourages nations and individuals to promote peace and reject violence in all forms, be it physical, psychological, or structural. Non-violence is not just an ideal but a practical necessity in today’s world, where conflicts, social unrest, and violence affect millions of lives. The United Nations calls on all of us to reaffirm our commitment to peaceful dialogue, respect for human rights, and fostering a culture of tolerance. Non-Violence and Peace in #Africa In Africa, which has seen its share of conflict, the principles of non-violence are especially crucial. Over the past decades, the continent has made remarkable strides in peacebuilding, yet challenges persist. According to the Global Peace Index 2023, sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the regions with the highest levels of violence, with armed conflict, political instability, and societal violence still prevalent in several countries. However, African nations are increasingly turning to dialogue and reconciliation to resolve disputes. The African Union’s efforts to mediate conflicts in countries such as Sudan and Ethiopia highlight the importance of African-led peace initiatives. In addition, statistics show that peacekeeping missions and local peacebuilders have contributed to a 16% reduction in conflict-related deaths across the continent between 2010 and 2020. Nevertheless, gender-based violence remains a significant issue, with estimates indicating that over 40% of women in sub-Saharan Africa experience some form of violence in their lifetime. To truly foster non-violence, Africa must continue to invest in education, economic development, and the empowerment of civil society to address the root causes of violence. Building sustainable peace in Africa will not only benefit the continent but also contribute to global stability. Nonviolent Network of Africa Peace Builders was in attendance for the 2024 United Nations international day of peace, jointly organized by Kaduna State Peace Commission and partners; with the theme: "Strengthening the Culture and Values of the peaceful coexistence in Kaduna. The event had in attendance prominent and esteemed individuals such as Kaduna state Governor, heavily represented by the Honorable Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Executive Vice Chairman Kaduna State Peace Commission, traditional rulers and royal fathers, Religious leaders and other representatives from Security agencies and CSOs. The Hallmark of the event was the unveiling of three critical peacebuilding policy documents for Kaduna State: 1. Kaduna State Action Plan on Youth, Peace, and Security (2024-2027) 2. Kaduna State Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (2024-2027) 3. Strategic Plan of the Kaduna State Peace Commission (Pathway to Sustainable Peace and Social Harmony) Other side events include commissioning of Kaduna Women Mediators, insightful panel discussions by experts and interactive sessions which explored how these strategic documents can shape the future of peacebuilding in Kaduna State. Africa has the #youngest and #fast-growing population with 75% of its population under the age of 35 and representing 42% of the global #youth population by 2030. Holding forums to #reimagine #feminist_political_actions in Syria started in 2022, when Badael reacted to the urgency of responding to the frozen political imagination (nationally and internationally) regarding Syria by creating a thinking and reimagining space for Syrian women political and feminist actors to break the repetitive approaches to peace and political processes in this context. ‘Reimagining’ is neither new nor unique to the peacebuilding sector. However, our approach puts emphasis on challenging pre-existing patriarchal and colonial constraints that have shaped the way we think about, do, and conceptualise political action and #peace #mediation. The premise is to hold a carefully designed intentional, non-prescriptive, and iterative space liberated from the pressure of producing the quick outcomes that are often produced at the expense of the #transformative quality of the space. In doing so, the forum does not merely pursue to inject (more) women into dysfunctional processes but it rather problematises those processes and offers new thinking for conceptualising inclusive peace mediation from a #feminist perspective.
