[ CEJ at the "Green and Inclusive Approach to Mineral-Based Development and Industrialization" Workshop ] The Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) was pleased to participate in a workshop addressing a green and inclusive mineral-based development in Ndola, Zambia, organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). Mr. Freeman Mubanga, the Head of Research and Studies at CEJ, emphasised the necessity of prioritizing environmental protection and ecosystem sustainability in the context of mineral-based industrialization during a critical panel discussion. Responding to queries about industry linkages, Mr. Mubanga emphasized Zambia's significant strides in integrating mining with local industries, particularly through robust efforts in copper beneficiation. He stressed the urgent need for improved infrastructure, expanded access to financing, and comprehensive workforce development to eliminate the barriers stifling further industrialization. The key challenges outlined include energy shortages, inconsistent policies, and a shortage of skilled labour, all of which severely hinder the mining sector's potential in Zambia. Mr. Mubanga called for decisive investment in infrastructure, the establishment of coherent policy frameworks, and the initiation of public-private partnerships. These strategies are essential to unlocking the extensive benefits of local beneficiation while ensuring that environmental sustainability remains a top priority. CEJ is resolutely committed to championing green and inclusive solutions within Zambia's mining sector, as part of its unwavering objective to drive sustainable development. #GreenMining #SustainableDevelopment #MineralBeneficiation

#Zambia is a significant player in #copper mining in Africa, second only to the DRC. The country relies heavily on copper exports, which constitute more than US$6 billion of its annual revenue. Our EU Africa RISE (Reform for Investment and Sustainable Economies) recent #Market assessment of copper value chain and investment in value addition, commissioned by the #EUDelegation of #Zambia and #COMESA unveiled various opportunities for expanding and enforcing the EU-Zambia copper-trade. With the demand for copper growing as the world seeks #greentech, Zambia's copper industry represents a massive opportunity for its growth - especially as new copper reserves continue to be discovered. Check our report that includes an in-depth dive into Zambia's copper industry, identifying crucial challenging points but also #opportunities in the #copper value chain for the country's #economic development. ECAP Minerals & Energy Solutions is strategically positioned to drive Zambia's energy transformation. Our strong relationships with state authorities and alignment with the Zambian government's push for Independent Power Producers (IPPs) underpin our commitment to alleviating the country's power deficit. We are also dedicated to supporting the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) in achieving its Vision 2030 goal of expanding rural electrification from 3% to 51%. Zambia, as the second-largest copper producer in Africa, offers significant investment opportunities. The country, bordered by several nations and with Lusaka as its capital, is well-positioned as an advantageous investment destination. Zambia’s independence in 1964 marked the beginning of its journey, and today it is recognized by the World Bank as one of Africa's top 10 performers in ease of doing business. Lusaka also serves as the headquarters for COMESA, highlighting Zambia's key role in regional economic integration. #ECAPMineralsandEnergySolutions #Reliablecontributorstoglobalminingandenergy
