As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on the transformative developments that have shaped our work: 🔹 BNG legislation: February saw the introduction of mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in England, requiring developers to deliver a 10% net biodiversity improvement for planning applications. This legislation has redefined approaches to sustainable development. 🔹 Carbon capture and clean energy: Significant investments, including £3.9 billion for carbon capture projects, have highlighted the critical role of carbon offsetting and storage in combating climate change. 🔹 New BSI Flex standards: The BSI Flex standards 701, 702, and 703, which underwent public consultations in 2024, set out requirements for nature markets in the UK. These milestones underscore the urgency and opportunity in addressing environmental challenges. At CSX, we’re proud to have contributed to these efforts, supporting developers and landowners in achieving measurable, lasting impacts. Here’s to continuing the journey in 2025! 🥂 #CSX #BNG #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact

A record number of applications have been submitted for the #EULIFE2024 calls. Interestingly, size of the funding requested from the LIFE Programme has reduced compared to last year - which perhaps means that quite some of the applications are very focused, smaller projects (and as it seems, highest interest was in the Clean Energy Transition and the Circular Economy and Quality of Life strands). Fingers crossed for all applicants, but especially for Gemeente Enschede who have filed a very important application planning to introduce a Dynamic Water Management System and neighbourhood-level interventions in Enschede to adapt the city to the cascading effects of climate change. ClimeCo believes that Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs), including verified carbon credits, play a crucial role in addressing Scope 3 emissions that cannot be immediately abated. Limiting the use of EACs solely to Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM) overlooks their broader potential. We recently sent a statement to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) with our stance. How can we better understand and address the growing pressures on land use? 🌍 Stakeholders from across the UK and devolved nations came together at the Royal Society in London recently to explore this question. Hosted by the UK-FABLE team—a collaboration between UKCEH and the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford—the workshop focused on how modelling tools like the FABLE Calculator can inform land use and environmental policy. The day featured discussions on balancing climate, food, housing, and nature goals, an introduction to the FABLE Consortium, and insights from the latest UK modelling results published in the Sustainable Development Report 2024. 🚀 Exciting News on the VCM ! 🌱 We're thrilled to share a groundbreaking announcement from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) which has just declared that the use of carbon credits to mitigate Scope 3 emissions will be possible! 🌎 After an extensive consultation period of six months, SBTi has decided to expand the use of environmental attribute certificates, including carbon credits, for abatement purposes in Scope 3 emissions. This move, backed by rigorous scientific evidence and supported by robust policies and standards, signifies a huge step forward in our collective fight against climate change. 🙏 SBTi's decision comes as a welcome boost for companies striving to achieve their Net-Zero targets. By allowing the use of offsets alongside innovation and technological advancements, SBTi aims to accelerate the decarbonization of value chains while ensuring a balanced approach to emissions reduction. We join the global community in saluting SBTi's decision, which marks a significant milestone in the fight against climate change. 👊 #Sustainability #ClimateAction #CarbonCredits #SBTi #netzero

How can we consider global land use in national net zero pathways? 🌍 I recently attended a workshop at The Royal Society to learn about the "FABLE" (Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land Use and Energy) calculator for modelling land use pathways. Whilst modelling #national land use pathways is important, ultimately it is #global land use that matters and different countries may need different balances of different things. The FABLE calculator was set up by an international consortium and is designed to be applicable to all countries. Therefore, it can be used to model national pathways, which can in turn be pieced together to form a global picture and facilitate international conversations. In all models, there is a balance between complexity and simplicity. To ensure the model is applicable to all countries, FABLE must remain relatively high level. But this is in many ways one of its key strengths because it means it is #clear, #transparent, and #accessible. Eunomia Research & Consulting, in collaboration with UKCEH, will be using FABLE to model pathways for each of the UK's devolved nations as part of the Land Use for Net Zero (#LUNZ) Hub work.
