It’s Cybersecurity awareness month. During my stint as a graduate assistant and director of basketball operations It seemed to me that professionals in athletics did not really take cybersecurity training seriously and that training was just a mere formality. I also found that students are not necessarily involved in cybersecurity awareness or training like faculty and staff members participate in a mandatory training. One of the solution that can be taken in hopes of mitigating incidents and equipping students on just enough of know how on cybersecurity risks and how to spot, navigate and report is so critical for students and their institutions. For example, students should be given a complete class introducing them to cybersecurity fundamentals throughout a semester regardless of their major. I believe this will help students to equip themselves with the knowledge to navigate through the evolving landscape of cybersecurity challenges and exercise good digital citizenship.

It's still surreal to think about how far I've come in such a period of short time. Just a few years ago, I was a complete novice in cybersecurity, poring over textbooks and online courses. Today, I'm able to set up a virtual home lab on my ARM-based Mac in a matter of hours to run a Nessus scan while battling a head cold. The journey has been filled with ups and downs, but consistent study and practice have always brought me much joy. It's a testament to the power of dedicated learning. By investing time in understanding the fundamentals of networking, operating systems, and cybersecurity principles, I've gained the knowledge and skills to tackle complex tasks like building a virtual home lab. So, whether you're a beginner or an experienced professional, don't hesitate to try and learn new things because, with dedication and consistency, you can achieve amazing things. Perfect timing, my Nessus scan is now done. #Cybersecurity #Learning #IT #HomeLab

Our future is slowly being shaped by data and technology. Hence, the important role higher education plays in cybersecurity awareness. Colleges and universities have a unique opportunity to prioritize teaching the skills needed to navigate and mitigate growing cyber threats. By integrating cybersecurity into curriculums, we can prepare students to step into the working world where digital safety will be the center of all that we do. Interested in incorporating my books into your curriculum? Reach out! It's important that we're teaching these things now more than ever. I wrote my first book ‘The Elements of Hacking’ - unreleased in 9th standard. “At 13, I chose cyber security over English tests. It’s not about the grades you make, but the hands-on experiences that shape your future.” While the other students were preparing for their school semester exams, I was able to perceive my interest and passion in the space of cyber security. It didn’t become a bestseller or earn me a lot of money. But it was an invaluable experience. Because it showed me that the best way to learn something is to teach and simplify it to someone. It’s important for students to understand that you really don’t need to be good at traditional learnings. It’s just that you need to draw a parallel on what excites you and how it could be made meaningful which guarantees your growth. If you can explain a complex concept to someone in simple terms, that’s when you really know it well. Since then, whenever I learn something new, I keep that as my benchmark. This has allowed me to pass on knowledge much more effectively to my team, which comes in handy since a large percentage of them comprises of young and dynamic cyber security stalwarts. The book was about the basics of hacking, aimed at helping young minds like myself understand the concepts behind it. It comprised meticulously crafted handwritten notes and a compilation of exclusive techniques. I wrote it in a simplified way, gradually explaining important concepts. And in this way, I solidified my own understanding of them. So the next time you learn something new, try this out. You don’t have to write a book, but just explain it simply to someone who’s new to it, and you’ll test your own knowledge. #Cybersecurity #SmithGonsalves #CyberSmithSECURE

🌟 Amazing Achievement with Girls Learn Cyber! 🌟 We've reached a significant milestone at Girls Learn Cyber! Together with a talented 9th grade student, whom I've had the pleasure of training for over two years, we completed our first professional pentesting gig. Utilizing tools like Kali Linux, Metasploit, Recon-ng, ChatGPT, and our own custom-developed hacking tools, we conducted a thorough pentest for a local small business. We successfully identified various security weaknesses, authored a detailed report, and provided actionable recommendations. This professional engagement has been a transformative experience, adding to a growing list of accomplishments including authoring conference papers, multiple bug bounty reports, contributions to the Google Hacking Database, developing an exploit in ExploitDB, and documenting a vulnerability in the National Vulnerability Database (NVD). These experiences have significantly boosted this young woman's enthusiasm and confidence. My ongoing mission is to empower more young women in middle and high school through comprehensive cybersecurity training, equipping them with the necessary skills to thrive in this dynamic field. Keep an eye out for upcoming training opportunities tailored specifically for middle and high school girls, including an online ethical hacking camp. Additionally, there will be options available for sponsoring training sessions and camp spots, providing vital support in nurturing the next generation of women cybersecurity professionals. Reach out if you would like to know more! #GirlsInCybersecurity #GirlsInEthicalHacking #GirlsInTech #CyberSec #Empowerment Photo credit: Árpád Czapp on Unsplash
