An Open Letter to Hospitality Professionals and HRs Dear Professionals in the Hospitality Industry, Have you ever considered that your experience in hospitality might just make you the perfect candidate for a PA or EA role? If you’re from the hospitality world, you already know the hustle: managing expectations, anticipating needs, and handling high-pressure situations—all with a smile on your face. These are exactly the traits that make exceptional PAs and EAs. Think of those chaotic days when the restaurant’s fully booked, or the hotel’s overflowing with guests. You juggle requests, troubleshoot issues on the fly, and manage crises with grace. That’s what being a PA/EA is all about—handling whatever comes your way and making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. You’ve spent years mastering the art of service, and that attention to detail, combined with the ability to make quick, sound decisions, translates beautifully into the corporate world. For HRs out there; Don’t overlook hospitality professionals when scouting for PA/EA roles. These individuals have already honed their ability to work under intense pressure, multitask effectively, and remain proactive. They bring something extra to the table—a natural aptitude for client relations, an ability to anticipate needs before they’re communicated, and an innate sense of professionalism. However, to my fellow hospitality professionals, here’s a quick word of advice: learn to say no. In hospitality, the customer is always right, and the instinct is to please everyone. But in a PA/EA role, setting boundaries is crucial for keeping priorities straight. Saying no is not about refusing to help, it’s about managing your time effectively and ensuring that the most important tasks are given the attention they deserve. So, HR professionals—next time you’re filling a PA/EA position, take a closer look at those with a hospitality background. And to my hospitality peers—don’t underestimate the value of your experience. You already have what it takes to thrive in a corporate environment, and you might be the perfect fit for a role you never even considered. Sincerely, Jacqueline Rwezaura 🤗

Even with labor rates going up, banquet/event services are one of the areas where staffing is most challenging, according to surveyed property managers. Every event I've produced in the last two years that had a banquet or catering staff has been challenging because people(not just a new employee or manager) were being trained onsite. #EventPros, how many of you have had similar experiences?

"Hospitality staff are expected to appear as if they weren’t even there, so smooth should their interaction and level of service be. When I leave my hotel room as a guest, somehow an employee magically comes in to clean up after me, transforming my room into a wonderfully clean space again. I don’t see the fairies, the Harry Potters, the helpful beings who are responsible for this cleanliness and order. That’s the guest perspective. We tend to under-appreciate the people who do their very best for us. And in this people-intensive industry, where hospitality managers are supposed to produce guest satisfaction and not “just” products, your hiring strategy needs to match staff output. You can do this by focusing on the required skills." These are the words of Dr. Michael Ohler, a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt and sought-after consultant. In a recent interview with Raksha D. , Hosco’s Research and Content Manager, he shared tips and tricks for helping the hospitality industry improve staff quality and quantity. This is a piece you must read! Catch a glimpse in the slides below, and check out the full article via the link in comments! #interviews #talentretention #talentacquisition #hospitalityindustry

IF YOU HAVE TRIED GETTING EMPLOYMENT AND THINGS ARE NOT WORKING, TRY THIS!!!! If you have tried and failed numerous times to gain employment with the big hotel chains, this post will help you. Big hotel chains either prefer to hire and train directly from institutions or headhunt experienced professionals firmly established in the industry. But who can blame them? There are more hospitality workers being churned out than there are positions in these hotel chains. They will thus select only the cream off the top, the pick of the litter. However, dynamics are changing. The modern-day traveler is all about bespoke experiences, environmentally friendly, and socially conscious options. A good percentage of guests prefer intimate destinations where they are on a first-name basis with everyone from the dog, to the gardener to the property owner. Thus, there is an ever-growing market for locally owned or managed small businesses. The days of family-run boutique hotels and community involved eco-lodges are here. The days of serviced villas and apartments on Airbnb are also firmly with us. We have seen this tectonic shift happen in the tours and travel sector. Gone are the days when Safari guides had to backstab each other for positions in a few colonial-era companies that controlled the industry. Small locally owned companies have emerged and completely changed the game, ushering in a new age of travel and creating thousands of jobs in their wake. The same is happening in our sector. Every other retiree, foreign investor, or tenderpreneur has invested in holiday villas at the coast or serviced apartments in the city with annual turnovers that can't justify the salaries that industry stalwarts with decades worth of experience command. This is where you come in. For the first time ever, you are actually the most suitable candidate for the job. It's your time to shine, your expertise is finally required. These properties can either be long term career options or bridge gap measures as you continue to gain experience for your dream job at a big hotel chain, if you still want to go that way. The best news of all, is that since human resources or marketing departments are virtually nonexistent in most of these properties, when you send your introduction letter and C.V. on email, it will be read by non-other than the property owners themselves, and yours may well be the only email they receive all day due to the current situation. Just like navigating the modern dating world, don't waste time and resources chasing that shiny person that everyone is trying to impress and who doesn't even know you exist. Go for the one who values you and shine brighter together. Best Of luck. Enock Alumasi Makanga Managing Director, Impact Chefs & Hospitality Academy www.impactchefsacademy.com
