👉🏼After seven months of intense negotiations, an important advisory group of the #EU has reached a groundbreaking consensus on the future of its agricultural system. The Strategic Dialogue, initiated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, brought together 29 diverse stakeholders, including farmers' unions, environmental NGOs, industry representatives, and academics, to address growing polarization in the sector. More on the report presented today: 📃 https://bit.ly/3MzlFge The consensus report marks a significant shift in EU #agriculture, focusing on sustainability, resilience, and equity. Key recommendations from the final report include moving away from land-based subsidies, increasing support for small farms, and incentivizing sustainable practices. 👨🌾🚜🌿The dialogue underscores the need for a complete overhaul of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to better protect farmers and promote healthy, sustainable diets across the continent (less meat and more plant-based proteins) 🫛🥗 As von der Leyen emphasized, the EU must do more to support its farmers and ensure a more resilient, competitive, and sustainable agri-food system. This consensus represents a crucial step towards achieving that vision. 📰 Read more @Euronews https://bit.ly/4g4xrwy #sustainableagriculture #nature #foodsystems #strategicdialogue #EU Systems Transformation Hub WRI Food

As Commissioner-designate Christophe Hansen prepares for his hearing on the future of European #Food and #Agriculture, we emphasise the need for a competitive agrifood sector built on fairness and cooperation. 🔸 A thriving agrifood sector depends on a functioning #SingleMarket and healthy competition. The revision of the CAP and the UTP Directive must enshrine these principles. 🔸 Farmers’ revenues are mostly influenced by international market prices. To ensure fair incomes while keeping food affordable, farmers should be supported in becoming more competitive. 🔸 Large international food manufacturers dominate the supply chain, affecting both buyers and sellers. The UTP Directive must address their unfair practices that lead to higher consumer prices but don’t benefit farmers. 🔸 Strengthening cooperation with local farmers creates a resilient supply chain that benefits all—lowering costs, boosting local economies, and supporting SMEs across Europe. We highlight the need for a fair and competitive environment for everyone involved in the supply chain.

The year is 2030. 🅰️ A thriving Europe: vibrant farmers’ markets teem with fresh, sustainable food. Fair prices and public support allow farmers to prosper, while young farmers access affordable land. OR 🅱️ A failing Europe: Farmers face greater financial uncertainty. Ultra-processed foods dominate, farms are being crippled by extreme weather, and Europe’s agrifood policy remains unfit to rise to the challenge. Which path will the EU’s new Agriculture & Food Commissioner, Christophe Hansen, choose? He inherits an extraordinary opportunity – and an equally extraordinary responsibility... A timely and insightful op-ed by Olivier De Schutter for EUobserver 👇👇 📖 https://lnkd.in/e5iyA-MX #Food #Farming #Agriculture #Foodsystems #GoodFood4EU

🌍 Embracing a whole-of-government approach for effective food systems transformation To drive meaningful change in food systems, we must transcend siloed approaches and adopt a comprehensive, whole-of-government strategy. A whole-of-government approach ensures that all branches of government are aligned with a common objective, integrating multi-sectoral perspectives and fostering effective collaboration. Food is a development issue that extends far beyond the realm of Agriculture Ministries; it requires the coordinated efforts of a diverse range of ministries and government agencies. At UNDP, we are committed to helping governments convene across ministries, development partners, and civil society. Now is the time to align all parts of government towards a shared vision, advancing transformative solutions that benefit everyone. Explore UNDP’s brand-new publication unpacking the six drivers of food systems transformation, a White Paper on Food Systems Resilience: a catalyst for the resilient, sustainable, and equitable food systems our world desperately needs.
