Delighted to contribute to the 'Handbook on Tourism and Behaviour Change' with a chapter that explores methodological approaches to understanding and promoting sustainable behavior change in tourism. The study I co-authored with Dr. Hamed Rezapour and Prof. Haywantee Ramkissoon PhD Environmental Psychology PhD Tourism MSc BA delves into the complexity of human behavior in tourism settings, emphasizing transformative experiences and the role of place attachment in fostering long-term sustainable change. This work underscores the need for innovative research methods to guide future strategies in the tourism industry, aiming for positive and enduring environmental and societal impact. https://lnkd.in/g8aiR3Ac

Very excited to share our recent publication as part of my PhD at the Universidade do Algarve, published in @Tourism Management. I would like to extend my gratitude to my wonderful advisors and co-authors Professors @Luis Nobre Pereira, Patrícia Pinto, and B. Bynum Boley for their ongoing support and guidance. I would also like to thank my mentor and good friend Professor Manuel Alector Ribeiro, Ph.D. And last, thanks to the financial institutions: Research Centre for Tourism, Sustainability and Well-being (CinTurs) and Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) Also, thank you to the editor and reviewers for their constructive feedback to improve the paper and all of the participants who participated in the study. Abstract: This study developed a new version of the Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale - the RETS 2.0 by integrating two new dimensions of empowerment – economic and environmental empowerment – that the original RETS left off. The RETS 2.0 also abbreviates the original RETS to three items per a construct, reducing response burden, and opening up space for measuring different antecedents and outcomes of empowerment. The RETS 2.0 was empirically tested and validated in the small island destinations of Boa Vista and Sal, Cape Verde following Churchill’s (1979) and Rossiter’s (2002) three-stage mix-method scale development approach. After demonstrating convergent validity, nomological validity was demonstrated by all dimensions being significantly correlated with support for tourism. However, in the test of predictive validity, only psychological, economic, and environmental empowerment were found to be significant predictors of support for tourism. The RETS 2.0 is proposed as a holistic and parsimonious five-dimension scale that assesses resident’s empowerment towards sustainable tourism development. https://lnkd.in/dySh_A-F

What management and sustainability implications result from combining polar tourism and science practices? Our new paper compares the Netherlands Scientific Expedition Edgeøya Spitsbergen (SEES) 2015 and 2022. Polar tourism is continuously diversifying in order to provide unique experiences to travellers. One of the ways in which this currently happens is by increasingly integrating scientific activities into tourism expedition cruises. While there are mutual benefits of combining science and tourism, this does not mean that the production of joint expeditions is seamless and unproblematic. We apply a practice theory approach to analyse the practical and organisational implications of combining tourism and science practices during two enactments, with a seven-year's interval, of the unique SEES expedition. Our results demonstrate that irregularly organised combinations of different sets of practices require higher levels of adaptivity, communicability and reflectivity to be reproduced successfully. Authors Machiel Lamers and Linde Van Bets participated in SEES 2015; Nathalie A. Steins in 2022. We are grateful to NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and Arctic Centre, Netherlands for the opportunity to participate, and to Oceanwide Expeditions for their hospitality. We thank all SEES participants for their cooperation in our research projects. https://lnkd.in/eEpiZa-H

I am thrilled to announce that my latest research article, "Research Trend of Cultural Village as a Community-Based Tourism: A Systematic Literature 2000-2020," has been published in Dialogue: Journal of Public Administration Science. In this study, I explored the evolution and impact of cultural villages as a form of community-based tourism (CBT) over the past two decades. Here are some key highlights: 1. The study synthesizes 61 scientific articles from ten databases, providing a thorough analysis of cultural villages worldwide. 2. Findings reveal that well-managed cultural villages can significantly benefit the economy, environment, and socio-cultural aspects of local communities. This "Multiplier Effect" underscores the importance of cultural villages in sustainable tourism. 3. The research proposes a new framework for evaluating the outcomes of cultural villages, offering valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners in the field of community-based tourism. You can read the full article here: (https://lnkd.in/gXFbRRRa) I am open to collaborating on future research projects related to cultural villages. If you are interested in exploring this fascinating area together, please feel free to reach out. #Research #CommunityBasedTourism #CulturalVillage #SustainableTourism

In 2023, I had the honor of making a 6 six weeks long research visit to La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. I combined this with a visit to University of Tasmania. Following this, I offered to do my part and do a bibliometric search on peer-reviewed articles on polar tourism in the Nordic languages (Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish). This international collaboration led to a recent publication "A Global Review of the Trends and Themes in Polar Tourism Scholarship" authored by Emma Stewart, Daniel Liggett, Valeria Senigaglia et al. The article is part of "Polar tourism and communities of practice: experiences, knowledge building, challenges and opportunities” edited by Alix Varnajot, @Marisol Vereda & Dimitri Ioannides What did we find out? We systematically reviewed 626 journal articles on polar tourism in 22 languages, published between 1974-2022. Majority of the articles focus on the Arctic, and representation of trans-polar matters was rare (only 6% of the publications). This publication makes significant contribution through involving non-English languages that often remain excluded from international meta-reviews. The most occurring key terms used were climate change, cruise tourism, ecotourism, sustainability and Antractic Treaty System. #ArcticTourism #PolarTourism #AntarcticTourism #research https://lnkd.in/dMJnrsbp

Well said Bob McKercher McKercher, B. (2025), "Tourism research methodology: confessions of an inductive researcher", Tourism Review, Vol. 80 . https://lnkd.in/eJQ7D5Fe A conceptual paper explaining the benefits of an inductive research approach adopted by a senior tourism academic. Inductive researchers adopt a pragmatic approach to tourism scholarship by playing with ideas, rather than being constrained artificially by constructs, frameworks and models. This approach provides great scope to challenge tourism orthodoxy and gain innovative insights into our field. This approach requires a great deal of rigor and does not infer a haphazard research approach. Adopting an inductive approach can free scholars to explore ideas and, in doing so, gain new insights that will drive our field forward.
