What can we learn from a hawthorn’s first flowering and the return of birdsong on a particular day?

It's not uncommon to see people adding a fresh layer of mulch to their planting beds either to enhance their aesthetics or to prevent weed growth. However, excessive mulching can be harmful to perennials, shrubs, and trees, eventually leading to their death and making your landscape design look less than desirable. It is recommended to remove the regraded mulch back to the original soil depth if you want to replace the mulch frequently. This will help to avoid burying the plant too deep and increase the chances of rot, disease, and death. I fear some more questionable maintenance companies may even carry out volcano mulching to increase their profit margins with replants every few years. 🤔

In Belize, the jaguar’s remaining refuge is divided into two big chunks of land: one in the north, and one in the south. These rainforests are connected by a narrow, six-mile corridor of forest, outside of which danger lurks for the giant cats. Known as the Maya Forest Corridor, this bottleneck in central Belize helps jaguars migrate, keeping their populations free from inbreeding. But the forest is shrinking, as mining and agriculture advance, and jaguars find themselves in dangerously close proximity to people.
