Why aren’t your kids and their friends over at your house? Does it seem they land at another friend's place more often? I’m talking, about Ravens game days, pizza nights, and even Friday night TV binge-watching. There’s likely nothing wrong with your house. Squirrels stopped play.   In our job, it’s always worth remembering to expect the unexpected. That’s the reason why we have backups, and internet hotspots, and a spare corkscrew.   But yesterday, while watching telly, the internet stopped completely. One minute it was there, and the goody was about to stop the baddy from doing something evil, and then the next minute it wasn’t. Nada. Nothing at all. Just a message on the TV telling me there was no signal, and a little, somewhat plaintiff, red light flashing on the magic box of tricks under the bookshelf in the back room.   After the usual IT Crowd-themed discussion with a call centre (“have you tried turning it off and back on again”, etc.), they agreed to send somebody, who’d be here between 12 and 2. They turned up at 12:02 (how’s that for impressive timing) and didn’t even come into the house.   What they did instead was to go straight over the road and up the telegraph pole. At the top, they discovered that our cable had been chewed through by squirrels (the second time that’s happened in the last 18 months or so). So they replaced it with a new one, dangled dangerously across the road and then hoisted into position on the front of our house.   Everything's back up and running now, and I’ve been given a new excuse I’m looking forward to using. Much better than “the dog ate my homework”, I can't wait to exclaim that “the squirrel ate my Internet” whenever there’s an unexpected problem.   It also gives me a chance to post a photo of the rose growing up the front of my house. If only the squirrel had waited a couple of weeks, there would have been a wall of pink flowers (you'll just have to imagine them for yourselves) – I’ll have to ask the bushy-tailed rodents to wait a bit longer next year…   #litranslators
