With more than 60 backers, an updated Kids Online Safety Act finally has a path to passage in the Senate but faces uncertainty in the House. KOSA, first introduced in 2022, would impose sweeping new obligations on an array of digital platforms, including requiring that companies “exercise reasonable care” to prevent their products from endangering kids. The safeguards would extend to their use of design features that could exacerbate depression, sexual exploitation, bullying, harassment, and other harm. If passed, it would become the first major consumer privacy or child online safety measure to clear a chamber of Congress in decades. ➡️ Read the full article to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eADTEVbs #cybersafetyconsulting #cybersafety #internetsafety #onlinesafety #digitalwellbeing

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where your child received unsolicited explicit messages online? Here are some tips on how to navigate the conversation: First, make sure that you approach the situation calmly to support your child effectively and without shame. Allow your child to share details without any judgment and validate their emotions. Let them know that you are there to support them. Explain that whether through a device or in person, photos of this nature count as sexual activity. If the photo is of another minor, let them know that pictures of that nature are illegal and not consensual. Share that you will need to follow up with the parents of the other child to ensure their safety and well-being. If the photo came from an adult, let them know that is predatory behaviour and also illegal under predatory charges. Share that you will save the messages as evidence and report them to the platform, as well as the police. Teach your child how to respond to inappropriate messages in the future, and acknowledge that their telling you created more trust in their abilities to use technology. #SexualExploitationEducation #SexualExploitationAwareness #CyberSafety #OnlineSafety #ConsentEducation #OnlineSafetyTips #Parenting #ParentingTips

Let's break down what exploitation means and why it's important to understand. Exploitation means taking advantage of someone, especially if they're under eighteen. By law, anyone under eighteen can't freely consent to sexual activity if it involves any form of exchange. Whether it's for money, relationships, popularity, or security, exploitation comes in different forms, all without genuine consent. Remember, any exchange of sexual activity for something else undermines the essence of consent! This proposed ban is part of a broader effort to enhance online safety for young users by ensuring that platforms implement stricter age verification measures. The move reflects growing concerns about the impact of social media on children's mental health and development, with lawmakers pushing for stronger regulations to safeguard younger users in the digital space. . . . . . . . #Initiatemagazine #initiate #initiator #Australia #SocialMediaBan #ChildSafetyOnline #DigitalWellbeing #OnlineProtection #CyberSafety #SocialMediaRegulation #MentalHealthMatters #YouthSafety #TechRegulation

In the modern digital age, conducting a thorough background check on your child's new partner can provide much-needed peace of mind. This practice assists in ensuring their safety by revealing potential red flags such as a history of criminal activity, undisclosed marriages, or financial instability. This is not about infringing upon someone's privacy but rather prioritizing the wellbeing of your loved ones. For instance, statistics show that 1 in 5 relationships have issues related to undisclosed information which could be avoided with a simple background check. Remember, it's about proactive protection, not invasion. #SafetyFirst #BackgroundChecks

More and more #sexualharassment and #cyberbullying online. I’m glad increasing numbers of survivors are enforcing their rights but court action will take time and SHE Singapore has been calling for Singapore’s own e-safety office to be set up so that targets of online harms have more self help remedies. Our research says that three in five people (who responded to our 1000 person poll) have experienced cyber harm. Alarmingly, many feel that there’s nothing they can do about it and that it’s just the price you pay for internet connectivity. The internet, which frees so many to express themselves and speak up for their values, is also turning into a place where bullying, stalking and harassing behaviour have victims self censoring because they feel helpless. Let’s change that. Thanks Theresa Tan for your relentless spotlight on harassment in any form.
