Last week I missed out on a NAIDOC week activity at #TeamDEWR - a workshop on delivering an authentic Acknowledgement of Country run by Acknowledge This! My colleague Kathryn Maiden told me I had to watch the recording and that it was the most engaging session. I did what I was told and have just finished watching the recording. She wasn’t wrong. The session encouraged us all to have the courage to make an Acknowlegement our own (be authentic), and drop the script (put down the piece of paper and deliver from the heart - we are never going to please everyone). The key is to get present to why we are delivering an Acknowledgement of Country so it doesn’t come across like a box ticking exercise or housekeeping. By the end of the training you have created your own authentic Acknowledgement of Country which I already feel so much more comfortable to deliver because it’s from the heart. Acknowledge This! Run free sessions of this training monthly - I would encourage you to participate in the training or even better - get them in to run the training for your organisation. #NAIDOCWeek #TeamDEWR

Here’s a glimpse of what’s keeping us busy this December: 🌟 January Pilots: The pilot phase of Work Package 2 is just around the corner! In January, we’ll be testing our guide designed to support VET institutions’ staff, helping both vocational education professionals and students thrive. This phase will provide valuable insights to refine and enhance our approach. 📚 WP3 in Action: We’re making great progress on Work Package 3, creating a comprehensive Teacher’s and Staff Guide, training materials, and engaging video content. This includes interviews with students and practical tools to empower educators in preparing Ukrainians for vocational education success. 💼 Diving into WP4: Simultaneously, we’ve begun laying the groundwork for Work Package 4, which centers on integrating Ukrainians into vocational education. 📅 Looking Ahead to February: Preparations are already underway for our next transnational meeting in February. This will be an essential opportunity to review our progress, share insights, and plan the next stages of this ambitious project. As the year ends, we’re proud of the progress we’ve made and excited for what’s to come. I am pleased to share my experience at the EU Project Hackathon held at KBR (Royal Library of Belgium) as part of the ViP-NExT Winter Events organised by European Vocational Training Association - EVTA. This engaging initiative brought together professionals committed to improving VET provision through innovative project development. I had the privilege of mentoring the challenge “Integrating Sustainability into VET for a Green Transition”, where we worked collaboratively to develop a project concept aimed at embedding sustainable practices into VET programmes. Together, we explored ways to enable VET providers, trainers and learners to be an active part of the Green Transition, aligning with EU priorities and exploring concrete funding opportunities. It was a rewarding experience to see the project idea take shape through a participatory process. The other challenges tackled in the event were: ✅ Digital Transformation in VET, led by Giada Bertolini (Zabala Innovation Europe), focusing on integrating digital tools into educational delivery. ✅ Gender-Inclusive VET – Creating Equal Paths for Success, led by Erica Giovanetto (Camera di Commercio Belgo-Italiana | Belgian-Italian Chamber of Commerce), aimed at fostering equal opportunities across genders. ✅ Boosting Internationalisation and Excellence in VET, led by Charalambos Vrasidas, Ph.D. Vrasidas (CARDET), Ph.D., enhancing global partnerships and quality standards. A huge thank you to the EVTA team for their exceptional organisation and to all the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment. **Southern California Open Training: A Day of Dedication and Learning** Yesterday, TEAM K9 hosted our **first-ever Southern California open training**, and what an incredible day it was! We had the privilege of training in a spacious warehouse with offices, offering the perfect environment to challenge and sharpen our K9 teams' skills. The training covered a little bit of everything: - Explosives detection - Narcotics detection - Even human remains detection Handlers and K9s came ready to work, with some teams traveling hours on their own time to participate. Their dedication to continuous improvement was truly inspiring. After the training, we shifted focus to an important topic: the dangers of fentanyl. It’s a conversation we need to keep having in this line of work. At the end of the class, I was proud to provide each participant with **two packages of Narcan (four doses total)** to take home. To the makers of Narcan: **Thank you for supporting our mission.** Your contribution makes a real difference and helps keep our teams safe. To all the handlers and teams who joined us: **Your passion and hard work are what make this community strong.** I hope you never need to use those doses, but I’m grateful we can take proactive steps together.
