Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm to hit Vietnam in over three decades, has brought devastating consequences to northern Vietnam. Affecting 26 provinces, which together represent 41% of the country's GDP, the storm has led to significant disruptions across industries and agriculture. Key Impacts: 1️⃣ Economic Loss: Estimated damages have risen to VND 81.5 trillion (US$3.31 billion), with GDP growth for 2024 forecasted to fall by 0.2-0.5%. Industrial Disruption: 50-60% of factories in the North experienced flooding, with 30-40% sustaining roof damage. Manufacturing output declined sharply, with the PMI dropping to 47.3 in September. 2️⃣ Power Outages: Over 6 million customers lost electricity, affecting 80-90% of businesses and 430 industrial zones, including major hubs in Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. 3️⃣ Agricultural Impact: Damages to crops and livestock reached VND 30.8 trillion (US$1.28 billion), with over 284,000 hectares of rice paddies submerged and 5.6 million poultry lost. Despite these challenges, Vietnam’s growth outlook remains resilient. With recovery efforts underway, GDP growth projections are holding steady at 6% to 6.5% for 2024, as underlying demand signals potential for a strong rebound. 🌏Super Typhoon 'Yagi' lashed out China's Hainan Province bringing heavy rains, causing widespread power outage, and forcing a million to leave their homes (Please see the below-linked report by "The Guardian"). 🌏Hainan Province accounts for nearly 45% of the total natural rubber output in China. 🌏Natural rubber prices spiked yesterday (Sep 6) afternoon in the Shanghai Futures Exchange as speculative funds longed their position in anticipation of the potential supply disruptions arising from 'Yagi'. The most active natural rubber contract closed 360 yuan higher (+2.2%) in the day-time trading in Shanghai Exchange yesterday. However, the market has undergone a correction by losing 155 yuan in the night-trading session. 🌏In the JPX Osaka, the most active RSS-3 contract spiked 10.2 yen (+2.9%) in the Friday night trading session. https://lnkd.in/eYqj_4Az

Super Typhoon Yagi, one of the most powerful storms to strike China, has caused economic losses of at least CNY78.6 billion (USD11 billion) in Hainan province, impacting approximately 400,000 residents. The storm inflicted direct losses of CNY9.6 billion (USD1.4 billion) in Lingao county and caused combined losses exceeding CNY69 billion in Haikou, Wenchang, and Chengmai counties. Yagi made landfall near Wenchang on September 6, with wind speeds reaching 62 meters per second. It has resulted in four fatalities and 95 injuries, affecting critical infrastructure and sectors such as agriculture and services.
