The Senior Eco-Nect project aims to support the emergence and the development of European ecosystems dedicated to the silver and ageing economy. The summit stems from the project's capacity to foster sustained collaboration and engagement among stakeholders. By positioning the summit as a platform for ongoing dialogue and knowledge exchange, the SEN project demonstrates its commitment to long-term impact and the cultivation of a vibrant community dedicated to addressing the challenges of the ageing population and advancing the silver economy. The theme for the hybrid event is 'Shaping Europe's Silver Future'. This theme was strategically chosen to highlight the urgent need for proactive measures and innovative solutions in response to demographic shifts. The summit aims to catalyse action towards ensuring a dignified, healthy, and inclusive future for older adults. It underscores the importance of collective efforts in driving positive societal change and economic sustainability. The Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz is setting a new benchmark for European cities on the path to circularity. On 19th September 2024, the city launched its 2024-2027 Circular Economy Action Plan and became the 85th city to endorse the Circular Cities Declaration. The ambitious plan focuses on transforming three key sectors — #construction, #repair & #remanufacturing, and #organicwaste — while aiming to reduce resource consumption, promote circular practices, and improve citizens' well-being. “With this endorsement the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz confirms that the transition from a linear to a circular economy is fundamental to decouple economic growth from the use of resources and to achieve a climate-neutral, fair and prosperous society.” notes Maider Etxebarria García, Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Vice President of ICLEI Europe. Milestone in Madrid 💃 Walking into the conference center, my heart pounded as I observed the crowded room of people speaking exclusively in Spanish. I felt a new level of fear mixed with an extra dash of imposter syndrome. I silently condemned myself for not taking more than a year of Spanish in high school. I was the only one presenting in English and had to remind myself to breathe. This past spring, I was honored to present at the First Annual Innovation and Sustainability for Remediation of Contaminated Soils in Madrid, Spain with our international partners GreenSoil Group. These exchanges are crucial for sharing sustainable green technology with the world. Not only did I get pushed out of my comfort zone, but I also realized the immense future growth potential for sustainable biological solutions globally. This trip also marked a personal milestone: my first time traveling to another country alone. Exploring the vibrant streets of Madrid, embracing a new culture, and managing the journey independently was an adventure that I'll never forget. I was even inspired to purchase a full-length wool coat that the fashionable women of Madrid wore so elegantly. If an opportunity presents itself to you that is scary and challenging… Take it! Sjajna konferencija. ✨ The Sustainable City Festival 2024, on October 24 at the Science and Technology Park in Niš, provided a visible platform for activists, experts and entrepreneurs to explore how sustainable development can drive Serbia’s progress. Organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and many local partner organizations, the event challenged common myths about sustainability, viewing it not as an optional goal but as essential for long-term progress. Panel discussions highlighted the role of innovation — both technological and cultural — in promoting sustainable business models, while discussions on citizen engagement emphasized the influence of civic initiatives in promoting public awareness. The event attracted a lot of media interest, which underlines the growing importance of these topics in the public discourse in Serbia. Given the challenges ahead, the festival gave participants a renewed sense of dynamism and cooperation. Cankarjev dom - CD Congress Centre Ljubljana, the official PCO of the 54th IAPCO Annual Meeting and General Assembly, set a remarkable standard by orchestrating the event with a strong commitment to eco-consciousness. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 using the Planet Positive Events methodology revealed that the four-day event, hosting 150 attendees, generated 441,536.19 kilograms of CO2. Notably, mobility was the largest contributor to the carbon footprint, accounting for 90.63%, as most international attendees traveled by plane. Energy consumption followed at 5.09%, then hotel accommodation at 1.87%, and event production at 1.20%. This detailed calculation serves as both encouragement and a benchmark for future sustainable endeavors, underscoring the principle that “what we can measure, we can improve.” The final sustainability rating for the event was an impressive 3.62 out of 5.00.
