Ahead of the Autumn budget, we asked our partners in the Sustainable Home Network to share their aspirations. Gary Woodward, managing director of Heat Pumps London, a Daikin Sustainable Home Centre, shared his wish list of what he wants to be done by the government. Apart from Woodward’s wishes of providing financial support by investing in the infrastructure and the workforce, he also called for the provision of targeted incentives specifically designed to nudge homeowners to take the first step towards a heat pump system installation and incitement for authentic sources of the recent misinformation campaigns that seek to tarnish the reputation of heat pumps. You can read Gary’s thoughts here: https://lnkd.in/eTuk3rrT #HeatPumps #AutumnBudget #Government #Sustainability #DaikinUK

The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning, alongside the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, has outlined the next steps for the state’s Gas Substitution Roadmap. This follows the ban on gas connections for new residential developments and the requirement for all new government buildings to be all-electric. Victoria leads Australia in gas usage for heating, hot water, and cooking, with over 2 million homes and 60,000 commercial buildings connected to gas networks. The state government has now developed a Regulatory Impact Statement, presenting four pathways for electrification by 2026. Their preferred option focuses on: ✅ Electrifying all new and existing residential buildings (excluding gas cooking) ✅ Electrifying all new commercial buildings Gas appliances in existing commercial kitchens and existing residential cooktops are exempt, and allowances are made where electrification is impractical due to costs or space. The community and stakeholders can provide feedback on these options until 28 February 2025. 🏠 A trial has launched to explore the benefits of heat pumps for our council tenants. The Living with Heat Pumps project will explore the benefits of living in a home with an air source heat pump compared to a traditional gas boiler. Ideal Heating has worked with Hull City Council and regional net zero campaign, Oh Yes! Net Zero, to install four of its flagship Logic Air heat pumps in council homes in the city, as well as four new gas-powered combi boilers in neighbouring properties. The project will track the thermal comfort for residents, as well as the cost, energy performance and efficiency of both the heat pumps and boilers. It is hoped it will produce valuable information and experiences on the use of heat pumps in social housing. Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Hull City Council, said: “We have a duty to tackle climate change and make our communities green, sustainable places to live. “A significant part of that commitment is the way homes across the city are heated. We currently manage a housing stock of thousands of properties within the Hull boundary and are continuously investing to improve energy efficiency across those homes, thereby supporting our tenants. “Working with Ideal Heating, a respected and long-established heating manufacturer in the city, will give us a greater understanding of further improvements we can make to reduce the carbon footprint of our housing stock, at the same time providing comfort and affordability for residents.” Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/gQ4Wxihh #NetZero #IdealHeating #HullCityCouncil

The recent Which? article highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the heat pump industry, particularly a continued lack of consumer awareness about the technology. As we approach critical interim carbon targets, it is imperative that consumers have access to a diverse range of proven technologies to support the decarbonisation of our domestic building stock— not just heat pumps. A competitive market, where businesses can offer various low-carbon heating solutions, is essential for achieving our goals efficiently and effectively. Under One Roof responded to the Heat in Buildings Bill Consultation last month to highlight the importance of considering the unique position of tenement flat owners when it comes to transitioning to net zero and zero emissions heating systems. Our response emphasised that: 👉 The proposals lack sufficient detail on addressing challenges unique to tenement buildings 👉 Tenement repair and maintenance should be prioritised before implementing energy efficiency measures - a fabric-first approach is needed 👉 There needs to be considerations for exemptions and financial incentives due to the short timeframe for achieving targets and the potential impact on energy bills Read the full response: https://ow.ly/auYq50Rg2g9

Check out our latest article in 🏘️ Home Designer & Architect 🚿 🛏️ on low-carbon heating systems being mandatory in new-build homes from 2025 and where copper piping fits in 👇
In a bid to drive a greener future for prospective homeowners, the UK Government introduced the Future Homes Standard in 2019, which ensures newly built homes have low-carbon, energy-efficient heating systems from 2025 onwards. The heating and powering of buildings consumes 30% of the UK’s total energy use; therefore, it’s clear that homes play a significant role in the UK’s effort towards reducing energy consumption. Big news – today, the California Energy Commission unanimously adopted the 2025 building energy efficiency standards, which will help ensure the vast majority of new homes are equipped with heat pumps for space and water heating! Congratulations to the many groups who worked so hard to make this happen. Here are the key changes from the 2022 code: -- New homes will have a dual heat pump prescriptive baseline, strongly encouraging heat pumps for *both* space and water heating, rather than just one end-use. -- It includes provisions to encourage the replacement of gas rooftop units on commercial buildings with heat pumps when they burn out. These units account for roughly 25% of commercial HVAC units in California. -- Existing requirements for new commercial buildings are expanded by encouraging heat pump space heating to larger systems in schools and office buildings. #HeatPumps #Decarbonization #BuildingCodes
