Yesterday was #worldsuicidepreventionday so as a dad to 2 kids yet to hit a world of smartphones and social media I found this presentation from Jonathan Haidt at Ogilvy UK #nudgestock2024 that talks to the impact of these technologies on kids in the last 20 years terrifying and hopeful in equal measure. The concept that really resonated with me is that society has totally changed the nature of #childhood in that we have over protected kids in the real world whilst in parallel under protected them in the online world. There is test 12 minutes in which brings this into focus as the answer for me is different to the approach I have adopted so would encourage you to see if it's the same for you. The statistics shared in the presentation are frightening but the message of hope is there is time and clear actions we can take to correct the negative trends of anxiety and mental health issues in young people. To do so we need to dramatically change their access to and use of these technologies which won't be easy given societies current mass adoption but the price for not doing so is way more expensive. #mentalhealth https://lnkd.in/e72_3-QF

Posted the first in a three part series as part of my newsletter on setting a crip or disability productivity baseline. In it, I share about my past as an athlete, how to set an accessible baseline for your productivity, and why it's so important not to over optimize when it comes to productivity as a disabled person. 📢 Check out the latest issue of CONNECTIONS! ⬇ March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM). It has been recognized as DDAM since 1987, when President Ronald Reagan issued a public proclamation urging Americans to provide individuals with developmental disabilities “the encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.” DDAM reminds us why we continue to fight together to raise awareness for programs and services for the people we support and the employees who assist them. Governor Kathy Hochul, the Senate and Assembly have all released their proposed budgets and now enter negotiations to determine the final spending plan for New York state. All three budget proposals acknowledge that the state must make investment in supports and services for citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which is a win! However, none of the proposed budgets fully address the very real crisis that has eroded the system they rely on. Our fight isn’t over yet. We must keep telling state leaders - WE MATTER! WE MATTER! The stories in this issue of CONNECTIONS reflect the strength and compassion of each of our local Chapters, and collectively show that we are even Stronger Together! Read the latest issue below! #StrongerTogether #WeMatter #InvestInUs #DevelopmentalDisabilitiesAwarenessMonth #DDAM #DDAM2024 #DDAwareness2024 https://lnkd.in/gKM9_VsE
