🌍 A Story of Connection, Perseverance & Dedication 🌍 When Mr. Bah arrived at Tujerling School in Gambia, it lacked basic resources for his students. His tireless efforts to secure support seemed hopeless—until Marie Gillen responded. Her support became a beacon of hope for the entire school. Marie is the Founder of the Global Orphan Empowerment Academy. In 2020, Waste to Wonder Worldwide partnered with the Global Orphan Empowerment Academy by supplying School in a Box shipments to enhance learning spaces and generate funds during the pandemic. A visit to Gambia by our MD Michael Amos revealed another challenge, children were missing school to walk miles for water. Joining forces with Marie and our corporate partners, we funded 18 solar-powered bore wells, providing safe drinking water for 36,000 people per day. The impact was immediate, children could now attend school and families could grow and sell surplus crops to generate income. After being away for a while, I’ve finally achieved another milestone! Just finished the Official Development Assistance Academy by One Young World and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It’s been great to learn from global experts and front-line community leaders who are driving local development initiatives on the ground. We are living in an age of poly-crises where interrelated challenges affect communities and global systems – from conflicts and climate change to health inequities. Huge gaps remain to achieve #SDGs like universal access to water and sanitation. Now more than ever is the time for holistic, comprehensive development programmes that are designed by, with and for the local communities most affected by these challenges. We need to move away from seeing #ODA as charitable acts from the so-called Global North and recognize it for what it is: an investment in our common future in an interconnected world. It is critical that we empower the youth, who are developing innovative solutions and founding social enterprises to tackle the challenges on the ground. The young generation will have to live with the decisions and policies we make today, so they need a seat at all tables. Finally, we need to rethink how we can leverage private capital for good. Blended finance approaches, combining philanthropic, public and private investments, can create catalytic impact towards achieving sustainable development for all. #OneYoungWorld #OfficialDevelopmentAssistance #ODA #SDGs
