In this course, Sara Canaday underscores that coaching is a crucial leadership skill for organizational growth. Leaders use coaching to improve employee performance, foster career development, and enhance productivity. Coaching involves guiding employees, asking key questions, and building trustful relationships. The five key skills for leaders include performance improvement, development, relationship building, asking questions, and discernment. Effective coaching leads to improved skills, job satisfaction, and loyalty, benefiting both individuals and the organization. Common coaching challenges, such as time constraints and resistance from employees, can be overcome by prioritizing coaching, learning key skills, and staying present. Canaday introduces the GROW model Goal, Reality, Options, and Will to structure coaching conversations and help employees set and achieve goals. She stresses that active listening, patience, and clear communication are essential for effective coaching. Feedback in coaching should be specific, timely, and purposeful, focusing on observable behaviors and employee growth. Just finished the course “Coaching Skills for Leaders and Managers” by Sara Canaday! Check it out: Attending the recent coaching sessions was enlightening, particularly in understanding the distinct yet interconnected nature of training, mentoring, and coaching. In the business environment, coaching is about making others successful and guiding them to achieve their potential while addressing both short-term performance and long-term development. Unlike a one-time training event, coaching is an ongoing relationship built on trust and strategic guidance, which aligns well with the concepts we've covered in this course about continuous employee development and leadership effectiveness. One of the key takeaways was the "dual-focus" of coaching: addressing immediate performance improvement and preparing employees for future opportunities by guiding them toward relevant skills and experiences. The GROW coaching model (Goal, Reality, Options, Will) was also discussed, emphasizing a structured approach to coaching conversations that fosters growth while keeping accountability at the center. A valuable insight from the sessions was the importance of viewing coaching as not simply formalized meetings but rather an integral part of all leader-employee interactions formal or informal. Great coaches are proactive in identifying both scheduled and spontaneous opportunities to help their team members grow. The emphasis on active listening also resonated with me. Effective coaching requires intense, focused listening, and resisting the urge to jump in with solutions. Instead, it's about prompting employees to think critically and develop their answers. This aligns with my recent learning about leadership communication styles and how impactful listening can be for building trust. Another highlight was the business case for coaching showing the positive impact coaching has on employees' motivation, engagement, and ultimately company performance. Employees who feel their growth is supported tend to be more connected with their work and the organization, increasing overall productivity and retention. In summary, these sessions highlighted how adopting effective coaching strategies, such as continuous feedback, meaningful goal-setting, and active listening, can transform leadership effectiveness and cultivate a more empowered workforce. Optimism is contagious. This was my experience as I attended a get-together with Cohort 11 of the Executive Coach Certification Program under the Center for Executive Coaching / Coaching for Exponential Leadership. There was so much brilliance, passion, and camaraderie within this little nook of a coffee shop. That was one ingredient in the "secret sauce" as I gained the confidence to embark on my new calling as an executive coach. A community of kindred spirits is guaranteed to wipe away any notion of impster's syndrome. We never take our journeys alone. We march on together, ready to co-uplift (a term coined in this program) on a mission to serve our clients with the highest possible standards. Thanks to Ravi Iyengar for being the driving force of this get-together and to our beloved Mentor Coach Carla Manas, ICF-PCC and the dedicated Chrissy Caballero for gracing us with their presence. This week brings a few beginnings and endings for my coaching work with Procurement teams: Beginnings: ➡️ Pre-meets with a global Procurement leadership team before we launch into team coaching sessions in a few weeks. Why do we do this? 1️⃣ It builds trust between the team and with me as the coach so we can hit the ground running in session 1. 2️⃣ I can take into account the different learning styles of the team members and incorporate it into the design of the sessions. 3️⃣ I can understand each individual's desired outcomes for the sessions. 4️⃣ To ensure that we hit the ground running in the sessions and make the most of the time available by resolving any queries beforehand. 5️⃣ Everyone understands that their voice is heard and valued and they recognise their value in the team. 6️⃣ I can personalise the team coaching sessions according to their needs. 7️⃣ All of the above are partcularly important as what we focus on in the sessions will be cascaded to the wider team. Endings: ➡️Final 1:1 coaching sessions with a cohort of female procurement leaders; celebrating their successes and progress made. Why do we do this? 1️⃣ It's important to encourage reflection on progress and achievements so that they feel resourced for what lies ahead beyond the coaching. 2️⃣ They establish the next steps and action plan for future goals. 3️⃣ They take into account the solid foundations that they have established for their leadership moving forwards. As a coach, recognising beginnings and endings is an important part of the work I do.
