Another successful gathering with the Veteran Service Alliance in Tampa Bay! Through a network of faith based veteran organizations, the alliance leads the nation’s charge in eradicating veteran suicide across the U.S. The VA via U.S. Death Index stats reports an average 17-22 veteran suicides per day and Operation Deep Dive research suggests 2.4 times greater than what’s being reported by the government. Source: https://lnkd.in/gTydDCka Today the Department of Veteran Affairs is not capturing certain data sets that account for veterans death such as: “self-mutilation” and “self-inflicted” death attributed to substance abuse. Many more categories go unrecognized by the VA. The absence of these particular identifiers results in a misrepresentation of today’s veteran suicide epidemic in the U.S. The VSA’s nation-wide impact has yielded promising results since its inception: ▫️Served nearly 1M Veterans and Military Families ▫️Over 250k educational resources given ▫️Over 5k events/ programs and so many more data points still being gathered. If you’re an Ohio resident, serving on active duty, read this. 💵 Most active duty servicemembers are aware of Servicemember Civil Relief Act protections. If you're not, go google it. What's less known is that Ohio extends protections far past those outlined within the SCRA. Specifically, Ohio extends #SCRA benefits for debt incurred *while* on active duty. 📑 7.1. Interest Rate Cap To help ease financial burdens created by active military service, Section 527 of the SCRA extends the 6% interest cap on all debts, not just those incurred prior to #activeduty. Due to these unique protections, if you are an Ohio resident, presently serving on active duty, a creditor must forgive - not defer - interest greater than six percent per year. 📑 50 U.S.C. 3937(a)(2). The creditor must forgive this interest retroactively. See id. at 3937(a) (1) & (b) (2). The creditor is also prohibited from accelerating the payment of principal in response to a properly made request for a six percent interest rate cap. Id. at 3937(a) (3). Patriot Day is a solemn observance in the United States, held annually on September 11th to honor the memory of the nearly 3,000 victims who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The day also recognizes the courage and sacrifice of the first responders, as well as the resilience of the American people in the face of such a tragedy. Patriot Day is a time for reflection, remembrance, and unity, as the nation comes together to remember those who were lost and to honor those who continue to serve and protect. How to Get Involved👇 There are many ways to observe Patriot Day and honor the memory of those affected by the events of September 11, 2001: Participate in Memorial Events: Attend a local or national memorial service or event. Many communities hold ceremonies, candlelight vigils, and other events to remember the victims and honor the heroes of 9/11. The 34-page decision from my district is both disappointing and unsurprising. There's no question that Congress needs to intervene here, and I am hopeful that there will be an appeal. I want to extend my appreciation to the Special Operations Association of America and the other excellent organizations for highlighting this issue to both Congress and the American public. The core of the district court's concern (second paragraph, page six) seems to be the initial Congressional budget estimates, which sharply contrast with the later, exponentially higher costs brought on by — it must be said — the unseemly advertising tactics of plaintiffs' attorneys (the contaminated wells at issue closed decades ago, so blasting stock imagery nationwide on repeat of healthy, young servicemembers born long after the clear legal criteria didn’t help). Side issue: veterans, seriously, we’ve got to talk about stock imagery…particularly around mental health and medications… By emphasizing the potential financial implications (runaway costs), the district court appears to have introduced an ‘artificial’ sense of ambiguity around Congressional intentions, thereby inadvertently reinforcing the Feres Doctrine and Qualified Immunity. This stands in stark opposition to what was unequivocally clear Congressional intent, which SOAA captured nicely. The analysis and writing of the district court align more with what I would expect from federal agencies and those entrenched in D.C. politics; regrettably, we are now witnessing this approach from the judiciary too.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (0913 EST) Sept. 12, 2024   VA awards $52.5M to community organizations working to prevent Veteran suicide   WASHINGTON — Today, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced several steps in VA’s ongoing fight to prevent Veteran suicide — including awarding $52.5 million in grants to community organizations implementing tailored suicide prevention programs and services for Veterans and their families. This fiscal year’s grantees of the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program include 85 organizations across 41 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico to fund services in FY 2025. Eight additional previous grantees will also continue services into FY 2025. VA prioritizes awards for organizations that focus on providing services in rural communities, Tribal lands, U.S. territories, medically underserved areas, areas with a high number or percentage of minority Veterans or women Veterans, and areas with a high number or percentage of calls to the Veterans Crisis Line. These grants are a part of VA’s National Strategy for Preventing Veteran Suicide and the Biden-Harris Administration’s strategy to reduce military and Veteran suicide. Since 2021, VA has worked aggressively to expand support for Veterans in crisis, including offering no-cost emergency suicide prevention care, launching Dial 988 then Press 1 to streamline Veterans’ access to the Veterans Crisis Line, expanding firearm suicide prevention efforts, and more. “It takes all of us, working together, to prevent Veteran suicide,” said VA Secretary Denis McDonough. “By working together with these organizations in the community, we’ll be able to save more lives and get one step closer to our goal of ensuring that no Veteran is ever alone in their time of need.” For more details regarding the SSG Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant, and how this grant fits within our broader VA Suicide Prevention plans and actions, see the full press release @ https://lnkd.in/gd2NbqSp #va #veteransreachout #SPM24 #veteran #veteransuicideprevention #suicideprevention

Here are a few ideas for those running for President of the United States of America. 1) ZERO federal income tax on those over 65 and making less than $500k/ year. Those making more, than a flat Federal Tax rate of 15%. to the age of 72. 2) 1% reduction in federal tax rate/year of military service...active or retired. 3) 1% reduction in federal tax rate/year for those who have or served in the police, fire and hospital systems. 4) Bring on required civil service commitment for under age of 25. 5) Take 50% of ALL campaign funds and donate to mental health and housing for veterans.
