In the five years since I arrived in Poland, I have been taken aback by the rapid advancement of the Polish economy. When asked if life in Poland was expensive, I used to casually reply, "oh, just divide everything by two." That time is over. While walking through the city centers of Dieppe, Le Tréport, and Mers-les-Bains in Normandy a week ago, I was struck by the number of buildings in need of renovation (a sight I have become unaccustomed to in Poland), that is, one in two (old electrical installations, single glazing, etc). Looking at the construction dates: 1857, 1904, ... All this requires huge investments. Even when renovated, the outdated building materials mean that these buildings remain unheatable and damp. Obviously, nothing can be demolished because it’s historic… More on the topic here: https://lnkd.in/dmNisHZc

Warmest congrats to Stéphane Séjourné for the new position as Executive Vice-President for Europe with responsibility for prosperity and industrial strategy. As association for international logistrial real estate, we need your support to strengthening European competitiveness: this also means being able to react much more quickly to changes. Here we need an initiative to speed up all approval procedures: for example, we believe that a building permit must be issued within a maximum of 6 months, but you will know that this period is significantly longer in France. Who can predict what will happen in 4 years' time, if the building permit applied for today is granted in France? This does not only apply to France, of course, but to many other EU countries. This is the key to competitiveness, particularly in the area of logistics and industrial real estate: without a real estate basis, the industry cannot achieve anything. The observation of how much better Nordic countries are governed, compared to the UK, is so often repeated it's almost dull and inevitably continues on to what can be achieved with eye watering taxation and vast oil resources. Estonia, however, has none of that- with only 30 years of independence and a flat tax rate regardless of income. 3 days in Tallinn revealed a country that is spotlessly clean, public transport is plentiful and cheap (2 euros gets you onto a new electric bus, with free transport for residents) with an incredibly well executed fusion of historic and ultra-modern architecture. Estonia shows that it's not only the Scandinavians who operate better than we do. ...of course nearly 1 billion euros of EU funding helps.

It's been an enlightening few days for our colleagues participating in the Belgian Economic Mission to Brazil, as they have met and discussed how connected lighting solutions can benefit towns, cities and businesses. Plinio Godoy, our Technical Manager in Brazil shared his insights on smart infrastructure and sustainable urban solutions during the panel discussion on “Smart and Sustainable Cities and Regions” in São Paulo. We are actively involved in the mission to Brazil, as the country plays an integral role in Schréder's growth and success in the Latin American market. We are deeply committed to supporting Brazilian cities in their digital transformation, accompanying them on their journey and providing innovative solutions for smart and sustainable urban development. Thanks to HRH Princess Astrid for hosting the mission and to the Belgian Foreign Trade Agency (BFTA), hub.brussels, Wallonia Export & Investment Agency, Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) and FPS Foreign Affairs for organising the seminar and the mission. I simply don't get one thing (and don't get me wrong); Why is Warsaw's downtown so exposed in many publications referring to Polish economic growth? Yes, we are "quite" successful in terms of economic growth (our GDP per capita increased by over 800% in the last 30 years, but I assure my British friends that Keir Starmer is wrong about us overtaking you in the next 5 years). So what's wrong with Warsaw's downtown? Those few office buildings are nothing to major urbanized downtowns spread worldwide. The real economic growth can be seen elsewhere - in rural areas, suburbs, basements... garages ;) Ironically, major infrastructure investments and, most importantly, construction efforts are yet to come (CPK!) According to several pieces of research, Poles and Vietnamese display the highest entrepreneurial spirit, the highest eagerness to open a company, and the lowest jealousy toward rich people worldwide (which is a carefully hidden untruth in Poland, haha). There are challenges yet to come, but it seems like we're just getting started. What I think we still lack is a high managerial culture. This is a very important factor, but it is still under construction (although it may be a great opportunity for foreigners—check the story behind Gregoire Nitot or Dominik Andrzejczuk). Anyway, today is a day off in Poland (Corpus Christi). We'll get back to you after the long weekend to get back to what we used to do. Hard work.
