🌱 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁: ‘𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁’ DTI are incredibly proud to announce that The Plant-Based Food Grant has found our project "PlantePredict" (optimized shelf life and food safety of plant-based foods) worthy of support 👏 We are thrilled to kick off this project in the beginning of 2025! We are particularly looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and diving into the planning and execution of experiments that will form the data foundation for developing "Plante Predict" - a platform with mathematical models that will assist producers in determining: 🔹 The optimal shelf life of plant-based products based on packaging methods and storage temperatures 🔹 The optimal preservation profile to prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria in products (ensuring we don't get sick from consuming the products) 💡 At the DMRI - Danish Technological Institute in Taastrup, we have many years of experience developing predictive models that support the determination of shelf life and food safety for meat and meat products 🥩 These models are available on the "DMRI Predict" platform and are used worldwide by industry and authorities. Two of our models are even recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)! We are committed to applying the same level of dedication and expertise to developing models for plant-based products. #foodinnovation #plantbasedfood 🌍 Lærke Kirstine Lund, Anette Granly Koch, Lars Leopold Hinrichsen, Gry (Dawn) Terrell & Lene Meinert

In 2024, we were selected to participate in the Food Systems 2024 online course. This course is organized by the Dutch Food Partnership and the Wageningen Center for Innovation and Development. It is aimed at professionals active in the field of food and nutrition security, particularly those engaged in programs in low- and middle-income countries. This course aims to provide an approach to systems thinking and systems dynamics applied to agriculture, food value chains, and food and nutrition security. Additionally, it offers skills and tools to transform food systems into innovative, inclusive and sustainable ones.

An exciting read about how the Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI) is revealing the hidden complexity of what’s in the foods we eat. They are going beyond the nutrition label to uncover thousands of biomolecules in food that could have important implications for human and planetary health, and studying how these compounds are impacted by food production and processing. It’s thrilling to be a part of an initiative that is forging the next frontier in nutrition!
Great article in Science about our Periodic Table of Food Initiative!

🍽️ Next up in my series of academic publications this year is work with Logan Britton, Ph.D. on substitution effects of PBMAs with animal based proteins. This work also expands on experimental designs that I have been developing and expanding on the past few years. Are plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) replacing traditional meats, or are they just sharing the plate? Our latest research, “Are all meats substitutes? A basket-and-expenditure-based approach” published in Agribusiness, dives into the evolving relationship between animal-based meats and PBMAs. Using a cutting-edge basket-and-expenditure-based choice experiment (BEBCE), we found some subtle insights: 🔑 Key Takeaways: • PBMAs are usually substitutes but complements for many animal-based meats, often coexisting in consumers’ shopping baskets. • Environmental and dietary beliefs significantly influence the adoption of PBMAs, with health-conscious and eco-aware consumers leading the way. • Price matters: For PBMAs and animal-based meats that are complements, using targeted pricing strategies that look at both products in tandem could increase PBMA market share. • Policy implications: Clear labeling, education on environmental benefits, and strategic pricing can help PBMAs position themselves as viable alternatives to animal proteins. Consumer preference are extremely nuanced and effective marketing and pricing must take that into account if PBMAs want to increase their market share. Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/dixcs2ge 💡 Let’s start the conversation: How do you see the future of PBMAs shaping consumer habits and the food sustainability industry? #FoodEconomics #Sustainability #PlantBasedMeat #Research #Agribusiness #ConsumerBehavior #DietaryTrends
