Advancements in UAV technology are revolutionizing space exploration. A prime example is NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ingenuity helicopter, which has successfully completed 54 flights on Mars, showcasing the incredible potential of small unmanned aerial vehicles (sUAVs) in expanding our understanding of other planets. Ingenuity has provided essential aerial data, covering over 11 kilometers (approximately 6.8 miles) and capturing high-resolution images of the Martian surface. This information has enabled scientists to analyze geological features such as ancient riverbeds and rock formations, enhancing our understanding of Mars' history and potential for past life. Looking to the future, the role of sUAVs in space missions is promising. For instance, missions targeting asteroids or the moons of Jupiter could deploy drones to conduct detailed surveys and gather data from locations difficult for rovers to access. These small vehicles can operate in harsh environments and provide real-time insights, crucial for research and exploration. The use of sUAVs can significantly reduce mission costs—estimates suggest that integrating drone technology can lower expenses by around 30% due to decreased need for extensive lander systems and increased efficiency in data collection. The Robotics and Perception Group, led by Davide Scaramuzza, started in 2020 collaborating with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The 2030 Mars Science Helicopter mission plans to deploy advanced unmanned helicopters on Mars. The new helicopters will require a novel approach to handle the complex and uneven landscape. NASA flight tests are using Lidar to analyze contrail formation NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is performing flight tests to help improve understanding of contrails that will use new test methods and technologies including LiDAR technology. GE Aerospace and NASA recently partnered on flight tests to help further the aviation industry’s understanding of contrails, using new test methods and technologies. During tests, NASA Langley Research Center’s G-III aircraft followed GE Aerospace’s Flying Test Bed in the sky and scanned the aircraft wake with Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. This will advance the use of LiDAR by NASA to generate three-dimensional imaging of contrails to better characterize how contrails form and how they behave over time. For GE Aerospace, it represented new operating methods for its 747 Flying Test Bed, expanding capabilities ahead of flight tests planned this decade to evaluate performance of new commercial engine technologies being developed through CFM International’s Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines (RISE) program. Working swarms under sea ice NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is developing an undersea robot that can operate in a swarm under sea ice in Antarctica. The IceNode project envisions a fleet of autonomous robots helping to determine the melt rate of ice shelves. The underwater prototype robot has been tested in the frozen Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska, by engineers from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Engineers operated the cylindrical robot in Arctic temperatures of -45 C. It descended 100 m (330 ft) into the ocean, where its instruments gathered salinity, temperature and flow data. It was connected by a tether to a tripod that lowered it through a borehole, and the team conducted tests to determine the adjustments needed to take the robot off-tether in future. The undersea vehicles measure 2.4 m long by 25 cm in diameter with a three legged ‘landing gear’ that springs out from one end to attach the robot to the underside of the ice. The robots do not feature any form of propulsion; instead, they position themselves autonomously with the help of software that uses information from models of ocean currents. You can’t hail one yet, but you’ve likely heard of air taxis by now.   These are sustainable, transformational aircraft that will transport people and possibly cargo over congested urban areas and to nearby regions underserved by traditional aviation.   Next week, InDro Robotics will be part of large trade mission to San Francisco, organized by Canadian Advanced Air Mobility (CAAM) – the voice of the Canadian industry in this sector.   The delegation will visit industry leaders Joby Aviation, Archer, and Wisk – as well as the NASA Ames Research Center.   Stay tuned; we’ll be reporting from San Francisco next week.   https://lnkd.in/gu__phtK

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is developing autonomous robots that can attach themselves to the underside of polar ice and measure the rate of ice shelf melt. Known as IceNode, the project is being led by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Using their expertise in designing vehicles for the space environment, JPL engineers have developed robots about 2.4m long and 25cm in diameter. The three-legged IceNode bots have ‘landing gear’ that springs out from one end, attaching the robot to the underside of the ice without the need for onboard propulsion.
