Client Focus vs. "The Customer is Always Right" Early in my company’s journey, we were so focused on our product, efficiency, and operations that we saw client requests as obstacles. When a client wanted something even slightly outside our model, our instinct was to push them back into OUR way of doing things. But here’s the thing—clients don’t care how efficient YOUR process is. They care about solving THEIR problems. That realization led us to become more client-focused. Being client-focused doesn’t mean saying "yes" to every request or letting the client run the show. It means understanding their needs and designing solutions that work for them, while staying true to your core principles. I often use the example of a fine dining restaurant: - They provide an exceptional experience—great food, thoughtful service, and attention to detail. - But they don’t let customers walk in without a shirt or climb on tables. Why? Because their standards create the experience. In the same way, being client-focused is about balancing flexibility with structure. It’s about delivering solutions tailored to their needs without compromising the quality, expertise, and values that set you apart.
