ASEAN cities are urbanizing rapidly and facing immense challenges in meeting rising demands for food, #energy, and water. Amid this pressure, how can urban environments be reimagined to prioritize resilience, #sustainability, and health? Enter the Integrated Urban Services (IUS) program! Launched in 2021 under the US-ASEAN Smart Cities Partnership, IUS aims to transform urban service provision in ASEAN cities. Led by NREL with implementation support from @Regenerative Impact Ventures, IUS worked with local leaders to develop climate-smart, integrated #infrastructure solutions tailored to regional priorities. Through technical assistance provided to Iskandar Malaysia and Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, IUS pioneered innovative business plans and market-driven approaches, addressing food security through the integration of food, energy, #water, and waste systems. Designed as replicable models, these initiatives promote high performance, low carbon regional #EconomicDevelopment through novel public-private partnership structures. 🔗 Curious about how IUS is paving the way for a sustainable urban future? Singapore's success in developing green infrastructure between old and new buildings can be attributed to various factors, including strong government policies, urban planning initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and incentives for sustainable development. Hong Kong faces different challenges, such as limited space, a dense urban environment, and a high population density. Additionally, the pace of development and the existing infrastructure in Hong Kong may pose obstacles to implementing similar initiatives. However, Hong Kong is actively working towards sustainability goals, and there are ongoing efforts to enhance green spaces, promote energy efficiency, and adopt environmentally friendly practices in urban development. It may take time, but progress is being made.

🌍 As China’s cities grow rapidly, balancing urban development with sustainability has become a top priority. The first #UrbanShift National-Local Dialogue in China, led by ICLEI East Asia Secretariat, brought together national and local leaders, NGOs, and global organizations to tackle these challenges. Held virtually on 16 November 2022, the dialogue focused on integrating biodiversity protection and low-carbon development into urban planning 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekWmmYWF Key takeaways included aligning local strategies with China’s carbon neutrality goals, leveraging innovative financing for green projects, and building resilient, climate-friendly cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, and Ningbo. With the next dialogue set for October 2024 in Wuhan, we look forward to continuing this critical conversation. It was very inspiring to get some time with the world youth parliament for water. Melati Wijsen and I talked about the art of implementation and how we all are change makers and how we all are part of a democratic process of governance. Participating in implementation and setting clear principles of regional collaboration has helped me learn how do direct large groups of people towards a common goal. Driving change on a regional scale reduces complexity and makes human environmental systems less complicated and more manageable. - I have really enjoyed the process of changing systems on a regional and provincial level. It is so satisfying to see and feel real tangible results. -- The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic(monkey) emotions; medieval(very very old) government institutions; and god-like technology. And it is terrifically dangerous, and it is now approaching a point of crisis overall. E.O. Wilson Restoring our environment means we must take charge of our local and regional governance and face our environmental problems together. This takes building trust and creating movement and providing quick wins to overcome doubt. At Eco-Mantra we will continue to work on environmental problems around energy, water, waste and biodiversity. And we will continue to build meaningful partnerships that truly want to drive change. 1. Define clear group boundaries. 2. Match rules governing use of common goods to local needs and conditions. 3. Ensure that those affected by the rules can participate in modifying the rules. 4. Make sure the rule-making rights of community members are respected by outside authorities. 5. Develop a system, carried out by community members, for monitoring members’ behavior. 6. Use graduated sanctions for rule violators. 7. Provide accessible, low-cost means for dispute resolution. 8. Build responsibility for governing the common resource in nested tiers from the lowest level up to the entire interconnected system.
