Yesterday we had an interesting dialogue in the Eurocities working group #Innovation & #Entrepreneurship on cities' challenges in supporting growth-oriented businesses to grow and thrive in #Europe. A survey we recently conducted made visible 3 top challenges in 22 large and medium-sized cities around Europe: 💰 Companies' access to private funding 🧠 Skills gap and talent recruitment 🏙️ Opening up cities for testing, piloting and procurement Not very surprising results for those working on the issues on local level, but making the challenges visible will help us tackle them. Europe is lagging behind in scaling up, compared to Asia and the US. One key question we discussed was which growth-oriented companies cities should support: all, or the impact businesses, whose purpose is to create a positive impact on society and environment? We heard several examples of how European cities create change and push for sustainable growth by aligning with the #SDGs. Among others, Amélie Dupraz-Canard showcased how Grenoble 🇫🇷 sets sustainability criteria for its funding support to companies, and City of Leeds 🇬🇧 shared how their Inclusive Growth Strategy focuses on a selection of clusters. In Espoon kaupunki - Esbo stad - City of Espoo, 95 % of the startups which received private or national public funding last year were impact startups. As chairs of the working group, we in #InnovationEspoo next look forward to diving deeper into the challenges in cities and finding the most impactful mechanisms to support sustainable growth. What is the current state of global innovation? Is innovation accelerating or slowing down? How is innovation coping in the face of higher interest rates and geopolitical conflicts? According to the WIPO report, Switzerland ranks first overall for the 14th consecutive year, excelling particularly in innovation output, including knowledge creation, impact, and diffusion. This makes me want to work in Switzerland or join a Swiss company. Here are some key takeaways from WIPO's Global Innovation Index 2024 (GII): Findings highlight progress as well as challenges across four key stages of the innovation cycle: science and innovation investment, technological progress, technology adoption, and the socioeconomic impact of innovation. 1. Innovation investments witnessed a major downturn in 2023, a reversal of the 2020–2022 boom 2. Technology continues to progress rapidly, technology adoption is growing, and the socioeconomic impact of innovation has mostly turned positive again. However, green technology and environmental indicators have either been progressing more slowly than before or have declined. 3. Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, Singapore, and the United Kingdom lead the GII 2024; China, Türkiye, India, Viet Nam, the Philippines, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Morocco are the middle-income economies that have climbed the fastest in the GII ranking since 2013. 4. Singapore, the United States and China score best in particular innovation indicators. 5. The regional GII leaders in innovation are Switzerland, the United States, Brazil, India, Singapore, Israel, and Mauritius; India and Rwanda continue to lead their income groups. Türkiye and the Philippines are newcomers to the top 3 for their income group. 6. Several developing economies are performing above expectation on innovation relative to their level of economic development. 7. The world’s five biggest science and technology clusters are all located in East Asia; Tokyo–Yokohama is the biggest S&T cluster globally, Cambridge the most S&T-intensive. 8. Why the Nordic Region is Falling Behind in the Global Start-Up Scene? Despite our reputation for innovation and high quality of life, the Nordic region is no longer hosting any of the top 20 cities for start-ups globally. Overall growth in society is dependent on job creation and this is dependent on a constant flow of new companies started by entrepreneurs. To change this trend, we need to understand and debate the cause of the decline. These are my five cents: 1. Overall Limited Access to Capital: Start-ups in the Nordic region often face challenges in securing substantial venture capital (smaller average ticket sizes) compared to counterparts in the US, China, or other European hubs like Berlin and London. Smaller investment ecosystems mean fewer large funding rounds, which limit the growth potential of promising start-ups. Notable, and great, exception is initiatives done by as an example the eco system around Harald Mix. 2. Talent Attraction and Retention: While the Nordics have a high quality of life, we struggle to attract and retain top international talent due to high living costs, tax rates, less aggressive incentive schemes, and stringent immigration policies. Norway have their own problems relating to taxation but similar trends are also seen elsewhere. Competing regions offer more aggressive incentives and easier pathways for talent acquisition. 3. Lack of Aggressive Marketing and Networking: Nordic start-ups often lack the aggressive marketing strategies and networking prowess seen in start-up ecosystems like Silicon Valley. Building global connections and visibility is crucial, and the Nordics is not leveraging these opportunities as effectively as we could. 4. Cultural Factors: Nordic cultures are often characterized by caution and risk-aversion, which stifles entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. Failure is life long. Starting companies is a sequence of failures that ultimately can lead to something amazing (the US have gotten this right). Encouraging a more risk-tolerant mindset and fostering a dynamic start-up culture is essential. Should be celebrated not stigmatized. #nordics #entrepreneurs #vc #privatemarkets

Ray Dalio's latest Great Power Index presents a challenging outlook for Australia, highlighting the need for a strategic shift towards greater innovation and productivity. Relying solely on our natural resources is not a sustainable path forward; we must adapt and evolve. I strongly believe that our institutions and corporations need to significantly improve their engagement with early-stage businesses. These startups bring a unique blend of risk-taking, energy, focus, and an unyielding "can do" attitude that larger, more established entities often lack due to their risk aversion, short-term focus, and cumbersome processes that stifle innovation. This mismatch often leads to what's known as the "innovator's dilemma." To bridge this gap, we must enhance the ways in which large organizations collaborate with innovative startups. Here are a few effective models to consider: > Corporate Venture Capital: This approach, when executed well, can drive substantial benefits by fostering innovative partnerships and investments in early-stage companies. > Corporate Venturing: This model involves working directly with startups to co-develop new technologies or business solutions, creating synergies that benefit both parties. Key insights from Dalio's report include: > Australia is positioned as a modest power, with its strengths lying in its rich natural resources. However, weaknesses include a relatively small economy, limited global trade significance, and underdeveloped infrastructure. Overall, the country’s power metrics have been stagnant over the past two decades. > The economic outlook for Australia is moderately unfavourable, characterised by a high debt burden and modest projected real growth (2.1% annually over the next decade). On a positive note, Australia scores well on the happiness and health indices. Life expectancy is notably high at 84 years, compared to the global average of 75, reflecting the country's strong performance in health and overall societal satisfaction.
