🌍 Meet our #TeamLocalEurope! With the names of the new European Commissioners still to be presented this week, cities are already one step ahead. Led by Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig and President of Eurocities, mayors and deputy mayors from across Europe successfully formed a gender-balanced body to act as direct counterparts to the incoming European Commission College. 📢 As Burkhard Jung emphasises: “The issues we face – from the rise of populism to climate change and refugee integration – require EU-level solutions implemented locally. The Eurocities Shadow Commission will make sure our voices are heard, and together, we will build a more inclusive, sustainable, and dynamic Europe.” #Ifmayorsruledtheworld

What if mayors ran the European Parliament? 🏛️ 🌍 With the new European Parliament leaning increasingly to the hard-right, the future of the European Green Deal is at risk. This shift threatens to undermine the bold steps needed to address the climate crisis, leaving cities and citizens to bear the brunt of inaction. But what if Europe’s mayors - with hands on experience of tackling challenges like climate change, housing and mobility - had a stronger voice in the European Parliament and EU policymaking? A NEW ANALYSIS from Eurocities and LSE Cities shows that if mayors had control there would be unanimous support for ambitious EU climate objectives. The analysis, based on responses from 92 mayors in the #EurocitiesPulse Mayors Survey 2024, reveals that cities, as the level of government closest to citizens, are uniquely positioned to rise above partisan divides. Even centre-right mayors, who make up over one-third of those surveyed, strongly prioritise climate action. The findings highlight cities’ critical role in implementing EU climate objectives and bringing action on the ground, demonstrating the strong need for closer political collaboration between the European Parliament and city leaders. With city leaders working as central political brokers, the EU can safeguard climate commitments and accelerate action, ensuring citizens participation and staying on track to meet its climate goals. Interestingly, the analysis shows that for some of the European Parliament delegations, such as Italy, close to 50% of new MEPs have experience in city politics. An alliance between these urban champions and city leaders has the potential to drive EU climate policies beyond partisan politics. Bigger vehicles, bigger problems. 📈 A joint report by Bruxelles Mobilité - Brussel Mobiliteité and Brussels Environment reveals a startling trend: half of all new cars in Brussels are SUVs. 🚘 These oversized vehicles pose serious challenges compromising road safety, worsening air quality, and consuming more than their fair share of street space. 🏙 What does this mean for cities? It’s time for urban areas to act, leveraging tailored parking policies and tax reforms to address the growing impact of SUVs on city life. In the next EU mandate, we’re calling on the EU institutions to address bloating vehicle dimensions.
