On #WorldHumanitarianDay, we celebrate the dedication of community members and humanitarian workers around the world who serve on the front lines to fight hunger and malnutrition. From providing emergency relief in crisis zones to implementing long-term food security programs, humanitarian workers embody the spirit of compassion and resilience. Unfortunately, attacks harming humanitarians have become common and in violation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). 🔴 In 2023, 280 humanitarians were killed, most of them were national staff working to help their own communities. 🔴 In 2024, more than 170 humanitarians have been killed. At least another 150 have been injured or abducted. It's time to uphold the rules to ensure respect for #IHL. We join all partners to call those in power to act to ensure protection of civilians, including humanitarians, in conflict zones. #GoodFood4All | Save the Children International | World Vision

RIP AI precision on clearly marked vehicles? Stop all violence! Stop killing innocent humanitarians! Israel could actually "easily" follow the gist of the UNSC and the ICJ decisions by creating a humanitarian solution which nevertheless includes achieving its military goal of fully dismantling Hamas! If Israel opens its borders and create Blue Helmets/UN peace force controlled, UNHCR managed, refugee facilities in Israel, it could dismantle all military infrastructure in Gaza without causing any further civilian collateral damage. At the same time would the (disarmed) Gazans have a stable very safe zone to go to with a high likelihood to be able to return home if Gaza becomes inhabitable again (currently it is no longer). Finally, by involving the international community, a starting point for co-existence as equals could be created. www.pax.ngo & www.convergence.ngo
We are outraged and appalled by the killing of World Central Kitchen aid workers in #Gaza while delivering food to desperate, starving communities. “All this talk about ceasefires, and still this war steals the best of us,” states United Nations Relief Chief Martin Griffiths. These attacks are indefensible and unforgivable. They are a grave violation of international humanitarian law. We will continue to reiterate this tirelessly: Humanitarians are #NotATarget and must be protected at all times, #NoMatterWhat. They must always be able to safely distribute aid, and their vital efforts to help people in need must be facilitated. Period.

Children who grow up alone or get separated from their families when emergencies strike are among the most vulnerable groups in humanitarian crises. Many have no one to turn to for help. Humanitarian workers are there to protect and support them, often risking their own lives. Today, we honour their work. #WorldHumanitarianDay #ActForHumanity

We must resolve #humanitarian assistance access restrictions. In conflict-affected regions, security challenges limit the ability of humanitarian organizations to deliver food assistance to displaced populations. With 280 aid workers killed by violence last year, 2023 marked the global humanitarian community’s deadliest year on record. The normalization of violence against aid workers and lack of accountability is unacceptable, unconscionable, and enormously harmful for aid operations everywhere. On this World Humanitarian Day 19th August, we stand in solidarity with our fellow humanitarians and victims of conflicts and other situations of violence everywhere. We honor those we’ve lost. We fervently deplore that the world is failing to protect us and the people we serve. And we demand that those in power act for humanity to end violations and the impunity with which they are committed. #ActforHumanity #worldhumanitarianday

On World Humanitarian Day, we turn our attention to the challenges faced by those on the frontlines of global crises. In 2023, 277 aid workers were killed globally – more than double in the previous year, and the worrying trend appears to continue into 2024 with 172 deaths already reported. In our State of Risk for Humanitarian Aid Workers report, we analyse the most prevalent challenges and locations that pose the greatest risk. Follow the link below to understand what measures can be taken to counteract these threats. Bill Deere, Your representatives, are all local to the Gaza Strip, they are residents of Gaza. Like all residents of Gaza, they are stuck in the middle of a war zone, because Egypt refuses to allow innocent Gazan civilians to cross the Egyptian border and escape the war UNRWA, and the United Nations, have never publicly reminded, let alone demanded that Egypt fulfill their requirements under International Humanitarian Law, and allow refuges temporary safety. Terrorists could come and go as they please, via the vast network of cross border tunnels (until they were captured) and oligarchs have been able to bribe their way across the Egyptian border for the sum of several months wages per person. Why haven't you once publicly called out Egypt and the Egyptian president? Why haven't you called upon Hamas to stop stealing aid, stop operations in/around UNRWA facilities, refugee areas, and civilian infrastructure? As a UN agency, we expect you to be neutral, yet you prove yourself not to be.
"We see a conflict where there seems to be absolutely no bottom to it." UNRWA Washington Office Director William Deere tells Al Jazeera English that, even if no place and no one is safe in #Gaza, our staff are on the humanitarian frontlines and continue providing aid and services to families.

As we mark this year's World Humanitarian Day, we call for more protection of aid workers, especially across regions experiencing armed conflict and banditry in Nigeria. We also call on President Bola Tinubu and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to provide clarity and update on the case against Humanitarian Minister, Betta Edu, as the absence of a Humanitarian Minister deters the achievement of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs’ mandate. #impacthouse #worldhumanitarianday2024
