We support people every day who are homeless or who are at risk of homelessness. Sadly, we know first-hand that substance use and mental ill-health are common when someone is trying to survive without the security of a home. Whether people are using substances to help them cope with the challenges of sleeping rough or experiencing mental ill-health after losing their home, many of these support needs are rooted in homelessness. Our new report also demonstrates that good data helps local authorities plan the right support so that people can move on with their lives. Today, on World Homeless Day, ask yourself, what does homelessness truly mean? Homelessness is more than just a lack of shelter. It’s a complex human experience that touches every aspect of someone's life. When I think of someone experiencing homelessness I don’t just think of someone who doesn’t have somewhere safe and secure to call their home - and all the challenges that come with that. I think of all the emotional and psychological needs that we take for granted that cannot be met. I think of someone who doesn’t have the emotional comfort that shouldn’t be a privilege to experience. The ability to close your front door after a horrible day and shut out the world. The sense of belonging and community that we should all have in the place that we live. The dignity and respect that everyone should be granted. Basic privacy. Hope and purpose. The issue isn’t just about a lack of housing. It’s about lack of opportunity to break the cycle, lack of understanding, lack of mental health care, discrimination… Thankfully there is a lot of incredible work being done by organisations to help but it’s so important that we shift the general narrative from stigma to empathy. Homelessness is not an identity - it’s a situation. One that is far too easy to find yourself in. So this World Homeless Day, consider the bigger picture of what it truly means to experience homelessness and lets work together to find long term solutions. #WorldHomelessDay #StandingTall

Homelessness Week 5th to 11th August Homelessness can affect anyone in the current economic climate. It can be caused by a variety of complex issues from domestic violence, relationship breakdown to change in family or financial circumstances or you have been marginalised due to socioeconomic status, race or nationality. Homelessness can also be brought about by natural disaster too, and the displacement of whole communities has been witnessed across the country over the past 3 to 5 years. Particularly impacting rural communities. The impact of losing the roof from over your head has wide ranging ramifications apart from a safe place to sleep, the loss of self-esteem, identity, and the feeling of loss control over your life, leading to anxiety and depression. Losing your home, you also lose your connection to your community leading to isolation which is the biggest killer in our community. The constant stress of just surviving, exposure to harsh living conditions and uncertainty all exacerbate mental health issues creating an endless vicious cycle. I have total empathy for the impact after not only losing my farm but my home and the ongoing ramifications that plays out in my life. Access to support service and stable housing is critical to address the effects of homelessness on mental health in our communities. Let’s Debunk some Homelessness Myths! Myth 1: Homeless People Choose to be Homeless Most people don't prefer to be homeless; it can be exhausting, stressful and unsafe. The truth is that there are many reasons why a person might lose their independent housing: job loss, illness or disability, mental health, domestic violence, and rent increases just to name a few. The Arlington Life Shelter’s goal is to help each resident overcome those barriers and obtain affordable housing through our wrap-around services. We provide life-skills classes, personalized case management, and the resources our residents need to get back to the path of self-sufficiency.

Finland has been able to (almost) end homelessness – one of the most difficult social problems we face! So, Finland is doing something right. They have developed and implemented an innovative approach to addressing homelessness which gets people into small apartments with #counseling sessions without any pre-conditions. That kinder approach, which since has been widely used and is known as the ‘‘Housing First’’ model, was all about providing immediate help of a roof over their heads. The results speak for themselves: Four out of five who’ve been through the program now have jobs, are sober and live independently, with peace in their hearts. Between 2008 and 2022, the total number of individuals experiencing long-term homelessness dropped by 68 percent. Research indicates that, on average, 80 percent of homeless individuals have secured housing through the program. With such a success story already winding its way through the systems of Finland, it should offer an inspiring example for the world. Counseling has significantly helped to curb the problem of homelessness. So, the next time someone claims #therapy is just a fad, you can point to this example. Therapy and mental health support are indeed effective and crucial. #housingfirst #socialimpact #empathyinaction #homelessnessreduction #finlandsuccessstory

In this heart-to-heart interview, Executive Producer Dr. Robert G. Marbut Jr. and Director/Writer Julia Verdin sit down with Isabella, whose personal journey brings a deeply human perspective to the pressing issue of homelessness. Growing up in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood—widely known as the city's "skid row"—Isabella’s childhood was shaped by close encounters with homelessness, addiction, and mental illness. Her candid reflections take us through moments like waking up to find someone sleeping on her porch, grappling with heartbreak at the injustices around her, and ultimately using those experiences to inspire understanding and action. When Julia asks, "How does your past connect to this project?" Isabella’s response is raw and thought-provoking: "It’s not as simple as people think. How do you get a job when you don’t even have an address? How do you rebuild when there are no resources?" This conversation goes beyond statistics—it’s about the real, human stories behind the issue. Isabella’s words challenge us to look deeper, to trade judgment for empathy, and to ask ourselves how we can make a difference. 🎥 Join us as we explore the complexities of homelessness and the urgent need for compassion and systemic change. This is a must-watch for anyone seeking to understand the challenges and resilience of those experiencing homelessness. 💬 What can we do to create a world where everyone has an address—and a chance? #NoAddress #Homelessness #Compassion #Understanding #SocialImpact
