Australia has a significant gambling culture, with many forms of gambling readily available, including casinos, pokies in most pubs and clubs, sports betting and lottery games. According to research conducted by the Australian Gambling Research Centre (AGRC), approximately 0.5-1.4% of the adult population in Australia experience significant gambling problems, with an additional 1.4-2.1% at moderate risk of developing gambling problems. Seeking Input on Culturally Appropriate Service Delivery for Gambling Harm Did you know that Australia has the world’s highest per capita losses from gambling? I’m currently involved in efforts to reduce gambling harm and provide input into the sector around some of the cultural aspects of gambling. I believe it’s crucial to understand the challenges people face if we’re to offer meaningful solutions. I’ve shared some key points below but am also seeking feedback from others. If you or someone you know has been impacted by gambling, I encourage you to message me directly or call me for a confidential chat. Your insights could help shape more culturally appropriate services, such as Gambling Help, that truly make a difference. 📞 +61403113123 Here are some of the points I’ve raised: - Gambling can be seen as a way to fit in and socialise within the Australian community. - In Australia, people have access to gambling that they may not have had in their country of origin. - For some, gambling offers a chance to try something that was once taboo. - Those affected by gambling harm often experience shame and stigma, suffering in silence without knowing where to turn for help. - For some, gambling is tied to social status, and they may gamble to be seen as successful within their community. I welcome your insights and ideas on how we can improve services and support those who need it most. Together, we can create solutions that truly help. #reducinggamblingharms #gambling #culture #multiculturism #migration Aunty Munya Andrews Antoinette Lattouf Blaise Itabelo Costa Vasili Christine Castley David McAnalen Emily Unity Dr Faiza El-Higzi OAM Giri Sivaraman கிரி சிவராமன் Haoma Worgwu Ivo van Breukelen

Addiction Economy Thought for Today - when is it you, not them? (our controversial strapline being 'it's not you, it's them'!) Here the Economic Model of Addiction alive and well in this gambling article in the Wall Street Journal concluding: "Online gambling isn’t the first addictive product to hit the market, and it won’t be the last. Casinos today are following the same playbook as tobacco and alcohol companies decades ago: profit from Americans’ vices, insist on self-regulation, advocate personal responsibility and fend off oversight by supporting and pressuring politicians." They could have read our White Paper, it's so perfect a mapping! 'Responsible Gambling' ideas don't work, particularly when companies sign up to them & ignore them. Examples of Caeser's Casino here fined $13 million for their treatment of 'VIPS' (people who lose a lot). Including a guy who put himself on a banned list for on and offline gambling, but was allowed to lose $240k and a self-employed nanny allowed to lose £18,000 in a year, after she told them she “spent her savings and was borrowing from family and using her overdraft to gamble.” What does my White Paper on the 5 models say: THE MORAL MODEL OF ADDICTION: (a new 5th model coming soon!) - it is totally their own fault and their responsibility. They are so weak or ignorant they even know it's harming them and they just carry on - they deserve everything they get. THE BIOLOGICAL MODEL: - there's something wrong with their brain, they need to be cured of this terrible disease, we can give them some drugs to help with this obvious disorder of the mind. THE PSYCHOLOGICAL MODEL: - they have an addictive personality and deeply rooted psychological self-regulation issues. We have to get to the bottom of why they continue to do this. THE SOCIAL MODEL : - there are external cultural or personal external influences shaping their behaviour which need to be identified and addressed. THE ECONOMIC MODEL: - companies have engineered addictive products, environments and incentives which specifically identify and target vulnerable individuals. This should be prevented, the organisations, punished and the ways they undermine the individual's ability to constrain their use discontinued. Not done this before & think it works quite well & show's the value of the distinctions, which are serious academic models - except the Economic which we just invented! My conclusion using these models is: 1. Prioritise the restrictions to the economic model 2. With un-addiction, take a respectful and empathetic approach to individual circumstances which seeks to understand, explore and respond to the social, psychological, biological and economic drivers 3. Ditch the moralising, it's wrong & unhelpful. Thanks again to Jonathan Andrew, PhD for bailing me out on a Friday with this helpful article! https://lnkd.in/e6rzNbgQ

My hot take!!! “Healthy gamblers hold the key to safer gambling success!” Day 2 here at #SBCSummit Lisbon and we are inviting people to the Better Change (Gibraltar) Ltd to share their hot takes on the industry. Back in 2019 I delivered a presentation at an event titled “Safer Gambling Tools - a consumer perspective”. In my research for the presentation I spoke to people in treatment and recovery from gambling addiction and as you can imagine their view of Safer Gambling tools where not favourable. For some they had no effect and for others they even prolonged their gambling issues. To add balance to my research I spoke to some of my old customers from my time as an operator, customers who I thought never had an issue with gambling, always stayed in control and probably had no use for safer gambling tools. But I was wrong….. I was surprised that almost all of them had methods of staying in control that I had no idea about, from writing out their bets at home to only bringing an amount of money out with them that they were happy to spend. There was so much I learned from them that I had not known when I was working in the industry and I wish I did so that I could positively re enforce those behaviours and share them with others. So there we are, I believe we should learn from healthy gamblers to help educate and support people to make informed decisions about their gambling rather than trying to shoehorn everyone into the “at risk” category to suit a political agenda and more importantly make it harder to identify those who genuinely need help. Want to change my mind or do you have a hot take yourself you’d like to share? We are at stand PP50 we’d love to hear from you. #PositivePlay #safergambling #hottake

Problem Gambling Awareness Month might be over, but the work has just begun. At Maryhaven we’ve seen an increase in people asking for help since sports betting became legal in Ohio in 2023. NBC4 talked with our own Abdullah Mahmood about this trend and what steps individuals can take if they’re worried about their gambling activity (or the habits of a loved one), including a simple screening survey. https://bit.ly/3PJIbow #gambling #sportsbetting #gamblingawareness
