Thought-provoking panel 'Artificial secrecy in the digital state', chaired by Marco Almada with presentations from Deirdre Curtin Madalina Busuioc Lisa Van Dongen Kristina Irion and myself. The conclusion is univocal: public administrations are characterised by a significant level of secrecy, which the #AIAct will not change. While transparency should be the rule and secrecy the exception, institutional considerations are pushing the status quo toward less visibility and less democratic oversight. In light of the many scandals of AI in public administration, this status quo is increasingly less sustainable!

There is an important role for public scrutiny and democratic accountability too in the algorithmic society for which a serious level of transparency is indispensable. Especially in the public sector but also other situations affecting individuals and societal values.
