ᴄᴜʟᴛᴜʀᴇ: ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴀᴄᴋʙᴏɴᴇ ᴏғ ᴄᴏʜᴇsɪᴏɴ ᴀɴᴅ ɪᴅᴇɴᴛɪᴛʏ Today I'd like to explore the 'C' – Culture in our #ENRICH model. Culture is the backbone of social cohesion and individual identity. It goes beyond mere traditions and customs as it encapsulates the collective consciousness and shared values that define a community. Neglecting culture can have profound repercussions. Consider an international company that attempted to expand its operations into a new country. Eager to replicate its successful business model, the company introduced its standard practices and products without considering local cultural preferences and norms. In particular, the company's marketing campaigns, which had been very effective in its home market, used imagery and messaging that clashed with local cultural values. This oversight resulted in widespread public disapproval and negative media coverage. The company faced a severe backlash, with a significant drop in sales and a damaged brand reputation. The situation forced the company to hire local consultants to redesign their strategy and reestablish their brand image, which involved considerable time and financial resources. This example highlights the necessity of integrating #cultural understanding into any strategy to foster #collaboration and acceptance. Embracing culture empowers communities to preserve their heritage while fostering #innovation and #inclusivity. By embedding cultural awareness into your initiatives, you enhance social cohesion and promote sustainable development. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs applies to place too.  Good places meet the essential needs of the businesses and communities within them.  Progressing up the hierarchy, places face their own version of friendship and esteem.  Said differently, people are more likely to return and be loyal to places which enrich them. At Aletheia, we help places work, and we make people fall in love with them.  And very occasionally, we are privileged to work with places that hit the fifth and final tier of self-actualisation. Place is more than simply a physical envelope or somewhere to go.  It is an enabler.  Think about the importance of a campus supporting R&D.  Or the role of a destination – a scaled concentration of uses and honey pot attractions – in supporting the brands within and the local economy around it.  Highly evolved places transcend function and enable something else to happen. Aletheia was enormously privileged to see this in action through a recent consultancy assignment with SHIFT London’s Innovation Catalyst.  Our work supported early formation and business planning. Based in East London, SHIFT offers places for products and services to be trialled at scale.  The place offering comprises the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its neighbours in and around Stratford.  Trial partners are offered a specialist ecosystem of support ranging from access to skills, markets and funding.  SHIFT is the front door to an Innovation District of global importance. In itself, whilst this is an exciting evolution in the use of an established place, the essential point here is the collaboration which brought SHIFT into being.  The seven founding partners and institutions from the public sector, world class universities and private sector who chose the base themselves on or around the Park did so, because they actively wanted to collaborate, experiment and create new outcomes by being together.  SHIFT is the first manifestation of this extraordinary fusion seeking new ways of working.  In reaching the pinnacle of Maslow’s hierarchy, the Olympic Park shows how a place-led collaboration has formed a world-class cross sector partnership delivering real world solutions for urban and global challenges.  But it doesn’t happen in isolation.  It was the leadership of the founding partners and their vision and tenacity which seeded and honed the proposition.  Place + purpose in action.

For years, I've held back from starting something new, experimenting with Radical ideas (Radical 🌍 World), and waiting for the right moment. We're finally getting ready to launch. Most efforts to change work come from a command-and-control mindset (Fiat Lens: https://lnkd.in/gf6tS_e6). We see work as roles created by owners and filled by employees, but work is natural—every animal works for food, shelter, and family. Society has turned work into a rigid hierarchy. Politicians, community leaders, and colleges emphasize jobs, not the beauty of work. Our current system sacrifices autonomy, meaning, and agency—key motivators for human effort that make work innately rewarding. To change work, we must shift our worldview: work is not a job. The employer/employee relationship is inherently imbalanced. Worker cooperatives strive to address this but often still view members as employees, leading to subservience to leadership. Organizing work as peer-to-peer teams rather than hierarchies allows co-management to emerge from people. Cooperatives have also struggled by not adopting many corporate technologies that are deemed damaging. We need to democratize and repurpose these technologies, enabling us to build new companies from the ground up. Redefining work at personal and community levels allows genuine collaboration. We believe in co-ownership and co-management, recognizing unique qualities, and learning to collaborate. This dynamic process requires time and intimacy, rarely found in modern work culture.
