Tracking and analysing objects in #Space through instruments positioned on the ground and through orbital space assets. This is the goal of Space Situational Awareness (SSA), which focuses on observing and understanding Space objects, especially in Low Earth Orbit.   🛰️ Activities related to Space Situational Awareness include object tracking, threat characterisation and analysis of the data collected. The use of Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) systems allows SSA to be the crucial enabling factor for achieving effective Space Domain Awareness (SDA). SDA is a primarily military concept that signifies comprehensive awareness of everything happening in Space. The Pentagon’s Space Development Agency issued a solicitation for the third variant of satellites that aim to give warfighters access to reliable and global communications capabilities. The request for proposal, published on Sam.gov, is for the Gamma variant of SDA’s Tranche 2 transport layer, of which the organization plans to purchase “approximately 20” space vehicles from a single vendor. The satellites will be part of a larger constellation of 216 systems that “will provide global communications access and deliver persistent regional encrypted connectivity in support of Warfighter missions around the globe,” according to the solicitation. https://lnkd.in/eWyscKp9

United States Space Force, Gen. Michael Guetlein, issued a stark warning this weekend about China’s accelerating advances in space technology and its growing capacity to challenge the United States’ dominance in orbit. Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, Guetlein described the evolving space environment as increasingly hostile, marked by the erosion of longstanding norms and the emergence of new threats to US space assets. In the past, there was a tacit “gentleman’s agreement” not to interfere with each other’s space systems, Guetlein said.
