Using a TEDOM UK combined heat and power (CHP) unit, which operates on liquid gas supplied by Flogas Britain, this technology offers an efficient and sustainable energy solution, helping to reduce both the carbon footprint and energy costs for the college campus. The solution is future proofed as the CHP unit can also be run on biogas or a hydrogen blend. What is cogeneration? long-duration energy storage solutions clean energy bottleneck As we transition towards a renewable-powered future, long-duration energy storage (LDES) emerges as a game-changer. These technologies bridge the gap between renewable energy generation and demand, ensuring a reliable and sustainable grid. Here's a glimpse into the diverse landscape of LDES solutions: 1. Thermal Energy Storage: Leverages temperature differences to store energy. Molten salts, for example, can be heated during excess solar generation and used to generate electricity later. 2. Chemical Energy Storage: Employs chemical reactions to store energy. Hydrogen, created through electrolysis using excess renewable energy, can be stored and used in fuel cells to generate electricity when needed. 3. Electrochemical Energy Storage: Similar to batteries we use in our devices, but on a larger scale. These store energy through reversible electrochemical reactions, enabling discharge when required. 4. Mechanical Energy Storage: Utilizes physical methods to store energy. Pumped hydro storage, the most established form, pumps water uphill during low demand periods and releases it through turbines to generate electricity during peak hours.
