For anyone in Canberra on 24 July, come along to the National Press Club lunchtime address. Jamie Pittock, PhD and Martine Maron are going to launch the Wentworth Group's Blueprint for Repairing Australia's Landscapes. The Blueprint is a comprehensive assessment of the actions and (indicative) investment required to repair Australia's soils, native vegetation, inland waters, coasts and estuaries, and threatened species. A key take-away - the repair effort is not only affordable and achievable, it is urgent, essential and in the national interest. It will take a concerted and coordinated effort, and greater investment across all levels of Government and the private sector. But the good news is that we know what is needed and we know how to do it. First Nations have been Caring for Country for millennia. NRMs, landcare groups, local community groups, restoration practitioners and everyday Australians have been working to protect and our restore our unique environments for decades. There is a huge number of organisations and individuals ready and eager to scale up. Let's get to it. https://lnkd.in/gHKu9xWx

Fascinating insights from the recent panel discussion on "International and Domestic Strategies for Ocean Conservation and Biodiversity: Is 30 by 30 Enough?" hosted by Monmouth University's IGU and UCI. Here's a snapshot of the key speakers and their presentations: - Mark Gold, from California Ocean Protection Council, shared California's 30 by 30 Initiative for State Ocean Waters, emphasizing the importance of coastal and ocean resource protection. - Sebastian Nicholls of Pew Charitable Trusts discussed the necessity for a robust High Seas Treaty to achieve the ambitious 30 by 30 vision, highlighting the critical role of marine protected areas. - Lauren Wenzel, director at NOAA's National Marine Protected Areas Center, delved into the intricacies of ocean conservation and biodiversity beyond just numeric targets, underscoring the vital role of MPAs in sustaining ecosystem benefits. It's evident that while there's progress towards the 30% global ocean protection goal by 2030, there are essential steps yet to be taken to ensure effective conservation strategies. Let's reflect on the need for comprehensive measures to safeguard our oceans for future generations 🌊 https://lnkd.in/gDFvU6XM #marineconservation

If you working on #wetland #restoration and wanting to measure and account for the benefits, then this guide might be helpful for you: https://lnkd.in/g6XNMgqH This guide - funded by Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and led by BlueCarbonLab - outlines an approach to measuring and accounting for the environmental economic benefits of restoring #BlueCarbon ecosystems, including #mangroves, #saltmarshes, and #seagrasses. The guide includes a process for reporting on a wide range of ecosystem services provided by these ecosystems, including: blue carbon, biodiversity, water purification, coastal protection, fish production, Traditional Owner cultural values, recreation and community values. The guide explores using the United Nations System of Environmental Economic Accounting Framework (UN SEEA). In addition, we provide a couple of case studies from Australia. Every day is World Environment Day for our team! 🌏 Leading with science, we aim to inform environmental decisions and deliver positive solutions. This year's focus is on 'Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience' – areas we are deeply familiar with. Across the country, restoration efforts are carefully undertaken to replenish the environment. 🌱 The question is are we going about this the right way and adequately considering the original state of the environment before its transformation? We believe the answer is no, not often enough. 🧐 Interested in learning about an alternative perspective on revitalising our environment? Nearly 25 percent of the world's total land area suffers from degradation (WRI 2014). Restoring these lands with ecologically sustainable, socially inclusive, and economically feasible solutions can provide multiple benefits for ecosystems, people, and their priorities. Some of these include food security, natural resources and biodiversity conservation, and enhanced local incomes and livelihoods. While several global and regional initiatives have committed to restore millions of hectares of land by 2030, turning these ambitious commitments into action requires clear pathways, tools and guidance. World Resources Institute's publication, ‘Step-by-Step Guide for Restoration Planners and Practitioners’ is a practical resource for planning and implementing a landscape approach to restoration projects. The guidebook identifies five essential stages of restoration projects – Scope, Design, Finance, Implement, and Monitor each outlined with key steps and a checklist to help project developers track their progress and plan properly before launching into a new project. World's Largest Fire Study Proves Success of Indigenous Fire Management! 🌍🔥 Exciting news for environmental conservation! A groundbreaking study has emerged as the world's largest fire study, revealing the incredible effectiveness of Indigenous fire management practices. At Globe Defenders, we are thrilled to highlight this vital research that underscores the importance of traditional knowledge in contemporary environmental strategies. Key Findings from the Study - Controlled Burns: Indigenous communities have successfully utilised controlled burns to manage landscapes for generations. These low-intensity fires help clear out dry vegetation, significantly reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires. - Enhanced Biodiversity: The study demonstrates that Indigenous fire practices promote healthier ecosystems, supporting diverse flora and fauna. By mimicking natural fire regimes, these methods encourage the growth of native plants and wildlife habitats. - Cultural Significance: This research emphasises the need to integrate Indigenous wisdom into modern land management. Recognising the cultural importance of fire management practices is crucial for fostering sustainable relationships with the land. - Why This Matters: As climate change accelerates the frequency and intensity of wildfires, the need for effective fire management strategies has never been more urgent. The findings of this study highlight that Indigenous fire management is not just effective; it is essential for protecting our planet's future. How You Can Get Involved ▪️Support Indigenous Rights: Advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge in environmental policies and fire management practices. ▪️Spread the Word: Share this study with your networks to raise awareness about the benefits of Indigenous fire management. Let's celebrate the power of Indigenous fire management! #IndigenousFireManagement #IndigenousKnowledge #FireEcology #FireManagement #WildfirePrevention #SustainableLandManagement #IndigenousRights #NatureConservation #Biodiversity #ClimateResilience #IndigenousVoices
