Friday Fact ! ❓ Did you know that less than 3% of equity investment goes to women-led businesses, even though they represent 40% of business owners? Women entrepreneurs still face challenges securing venture capital, especially beyond early funding stages. While more women-led funds have emerged, they’re often too small to support larger, later-stage investments. This issue is made worse by the downturn in start-up investing and resistance to DEI initiatives, further limiting access to funding for women and minority-led companies. 💰 Women-Led VC Funds: Navigating 2024 Fundraising Landscape 💰 According to Venture Capital Journal, despite a strong start, women-led VC funds are feeling the impact of the industry-wide fundraising slowdown. As of November 30, 2024, women-led VC funds have raised $2.54 billion, which represents a 25% decrease from 2023's total of $3.43 billion. In comparison, global venture fundraising is down 13% YoY. ❔ It started with a simple question. I’m ashamed to admit this, but at the time it was asked, not only did I not know the answer, I did not even know about the issue it raised. Five years ago, I was speaking at an event about small businesses raising money from venture capital firms. Venture capitalists are professional investors who buy shares in companies in return for cash so those companies can grow. In 2023, women-founded #startups in Europe raised just 1.8% of the total capital invested in venture-backed startups - a figure that’s only slightly higher in the US at 2%, according to the @WorldEconomicForum. Yesterday, I had the honor of watching the documentary "Show Her The Money," directed by Ky Dickens and produced by Catherine Gray, Dawn Lafreeda, and Wendy Ryan. Following the screening, we had an enlightening panel discussion that emphasized the importance of cultural change through media representation and inclusive investment practices.
