For the past few days, I've been at the United Nations Summit Of The Future in NYC, where world leaders including prime ministers and presidents came together to tackle the pressing challenges of our time. In a historic moment, all 193 U.N. member nations finally adopted the 42-page "Pact for the Future," a decision that was uncertain right up until the last moment. But here's the truth: This pact must be more than talk and plans—it needs real action & multilateralism must work! So, what is the Pact for the Future? It focuses on strengthening global cooperation to address critical issues like peace, climate change, digital governance, and sustainable development. It sets a path to regulate AI, bridge the digital divide, and protect future generations. This pact is crucial for shaping a fairer, more sustainable, and equitable world, pushing us closer to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and adapting our institutions to meet today's realities. The world will be gathering at the United Nations for the Summit of the Future later this month. As PM Lawrence Wong explained in his video message, we must remain “steadfast in our commitment to international rules, and to ensure a global order that works for the betterment of all”. For us, “multilateralism is not an option; it is an essential lifeline”. What do we do when “trust in multilateralism is waning at this very moment when it is urgently needed”? We can wring our hands in despair, and join in criticising the UN. Or we roll up our sleeves, build coalitions, and bring our solution-focused mindset to the table. Whether on peace and security, digital transformation, sustainable development, oceans, foresight or risks analysis, my colleagues in New York and across the government, think tanks and universities, have been working hard with other nations of the world, to help build a future-ready UN. It takes skill and will to reach multilateral consensus. Oftentimes, consensus is elusive. But we must continue to find opportunities towards multilateral action to resolve our shared challenges. Looking forward to the adoption of the Pact of the Future, so that the world can collectively recommit ourselves to the principles of the UN Charter. #UN #Multilateralism

On 22-23 September, world leaders will gather in New York for the much-anticipated #SummitoftheFuture. At a time when effective global cooperation is increasingly critical for our survival, achieving it remains a challenge fueled by mistrust and outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities. The Summit’s main outcome will be an inter-governmental agreement – the Pact for the Future – featuring two annexes: a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. Today at the Summit of the Future, significant steps were taken to get back on course for the #SDGs through the adoption of the: Pact for the Future                                                                                             Global Compact; and Declaration on Future Generations Read the outcome documents here (https://lnkd.in/dr3kGwpc)   Throughout the Summit of the Future and related activities so far,  themes that have emerged include: the challenges that the world is facing today, potential areas for impact, the need for implementation and the need and role of non-traditional UN stakeholders (mainly youth, women and broader inclusion of civil society). In the Interactive Dialogue on Enhancing Multilateralism for International Peace and Security,  member states shared their countries commitment to multilateral action. Among the most powerful interventions were those that focused on reform with regard to composition and function,  application of the principles of the Charter, restoring trust and recognizing the multilateral responses required for peace and security to be reached, for traditional (conflict and violence) and non-traditional (climate change and pandemics) environments. #SDGs #StandUp4HumanRights #GlobalGoals #OurCommonFuture

Summit of the Future 2024: UN member states adopt “Pact for the Future” It gives me great pleasure to read this headline after being absorbed in the workings behind this Summit for the past few months. On Sunday, 22 September 2024, world leaders gathered at the 79th United Nations General Assemblies to adopt a foundational agreement, the Pact for the Future. The Pact strives for a multilateral effort on collective action as a “step-change towards more effective, inclusive, networked multilateralism”, focusing on five main areas of development. Over the past few months, we kept ourselves abreast of the amended revisions of the Pact, analysing its benefits and potential flaws as a global recommitment to multilateralism. As a non-binding agreement, it brings its complications, however, it has "provide[ed] an essential basis for action — a floor, not a ceiling, for the stepped up cooperation we need in a turbulent world".
