🇺🇳 On 22-23 September, world leaders will gather in New York for the much-anticipated #SummitOfTheFuture. At a time when effective global cooperation is increasingly critical for our survival, achieving it remains a challenge fuelled by mistrust and outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities. The Summit aims to reinvigorate not only the structures, but also the trust needed for effective global governance to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs and promote peace. Notably, its main outcome will be an inter-governmental agreement: the Pact for the Future. The UN Summit of the Future is a very important and timely summit which, amongst other issues, is trying to ensure that the UN system itself is “ fit for purpose” as humanity faces into a complex set of interrelated global challenges. Most intelligent people recognise that an unprecedented level of international cooperation will be required over the coming decades if we are to succeed in averting catastrophic climate change, address global migration, and promote peace, stability and human security around the world. It is importabt that UN Member Statez ( such as Ireland) invest the resources and give the necessary political attention to this UN Summit and to the processes associated with it. The Summit represents an oppprtunity for societies everywhere and for their political leaders more specifically, to act before it’s too late, and before the opportunity to create a more positive future for people and for planet is lost. Here’s hoping that humanity’s self- preservation instincts kick in (even at this late stage) and that the Summit of the Future can produce an overall political blueprint, and a set of agreements that will allow us all to create a better future for ourselves, and to avoid the potentially catastrophic global scenarios that will confront us otherwise…

The Pact for the Future was adopted by the UN Summit of the Future on 22 September 2024 in New York. The long negotiations and inevitable compromises led to a Christmas Tree-like text, with something for everybody, in terms of general statements of principle and repetition of past (unmet) promises. Its "Actions" have very little actionable that would change the world - they have no timelines nor commit resources, and occasionally include contradictory approaches on the same issue to please everybody. It could be worse, or even not at all, under the current geopolitical circumstances, so let's acknowledge that and move on. Let's use the Pact's positive narrative to push for concrete actions towards achieving peace, sustainable development and human rights, which are shared global aspirations enshrined in the UN Charter. Pressure cannot be exerted exclusively or primarily at the global level, because that is not where the leaders are ultimately accountable to. What is urgently needed is mobilization at domestic and regional level, where political decisions are made and resources allocated. This would also increase the legitimacy and effectiveness of decisions taken collectively at the global level, for a really better future for all. #UnitedNations #SummitoftheFuture #PactfortheFuture

UN Releases Pact for the Future to urge transformative collaboration on climate change and other issues. The UN's Pact of the Future, launched at the Summit of the Future in September, charts a course for urgent global collaboration. With 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty and a projected 50% increase in climate-related disasters by 2030, the Pact calls for ambitious climate action, social equity, and sustainable economic growth. It provides a framework for nations to combat inequality, reduce carbon emissions, and protect vulnerable populations, ensuring a future that is resilient, just, and inclusive. World leaders adopt pivotal UN Pact for the Future 👏 "World leaders are at UN Headquarters in New York this Sunday where they adopted the potentially game-changing Pact for the Future by consensus, with a small group of just seven countries holding out, having failed to pass a last-minute amendment. The "Pact for the Future," adopted during the UN's Summit of the Future in September 2024, represents a critical effort to address the urgent global challenges of the 21st century.
