DFI is a proud supporter of Geotechnical Frontiers 2025, the largest geotechnical conference in the Americas. Geotechnical Frontiers combines the annual Geo-Congress and biennial Geosynthetics Conference, occurring only once every six years. DFI members are eligible for special member pricing. Rate increases on Jan. 3 so be sure to register soon. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ejEzb4xT

Looking forward to the DFI S3 conference next week (https://lnkd.in/gmH6esiM). I'll be sharing a great case history on horizontal drains used for landslide mitigation, co-authored with Kenneth Johnson, PhD, PG, CEG, PE, Evan Garich, P.E., and Orion George, Wednesday Aug 7 at 1:20 pm in plenary session 3. Below is a preview of some of the data used in the geohydrological modeling that I'll dig into.

The AGS is pleased to announce Martin Preene, Technical Director at COFFEY GEOTECHNICS LIMITED will be presenting at the We Need to Talk About Groundwater Conference, which is taking place on 6th November 2024 at ETC. Venues, Manchester. Martin will be presenting on Challenges of Permeability Assessment for Geotechnical Purposes. Permeability (also known as hydraulic conductivity) is a fundamental parameter in the analysis of many geotechnical processes including consolidation, groundwater inflow to excavations and migration of contamination. Unfortunately, permeability is a challenging parameter to assess; even on a site with a simple conceptual model, permeability values within the dataset can vary by several orders of magnitude. This could reflect geological variability, but is often also influenced by limitations in the various permeability testing methods. This presentation will discuss the available methods to assess permeability values, and propose approaches to allow datasets can be used to develop realistic values for use in design. Tickets are priced at £150 for AGS members and £210 for non-members. All prices exclude VAT. Registration strictly closes on Monday 28th October. Extracting Multimodal Surface‐Wave Dispersion Curves from Ambient Seismic Noise Using High‐Resolution Linear Radon Transform #SRL Over the past two decades, ambient noise tomography has emerged as a way to image subsurface seismic velocity structures. One key step is to extract surface-wave dispersion curves. In a new study, scientists illustrate the applicability of the high-resolution linear radon transform method (HRLRT) for accomplishing this step. Interested in how it went? Check out the paper. https://lnkd.in/gpwKt-3Y

How can we assess the seismic safety of non-structural components? What are good seismic design examples in Switzerland according to the Stiftung für Baudynamik und Erdbebeningenieurwesen? We were pleased and honoured to have the Head of the Structural Safety Department of the Company Basler & Hofmann AG and Member of the Board of SGEB Mr. Yves Mondet presenting a very interesting session on this topic for the fourth offer of CAS ETH in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting 2024-2025 at ETH Zurich. #nonstructuralcomponents #seismicdesignexamples

The CAS ETH in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting focuses on the seismic design of new structures and the seismic evaluation and retrofitting of existing structures located in Switzerland. The presentation of the optimal modelling strategies, analysis methods and practical engineering solutions for the seismic design and evaluation of structures lies at the core of the programme. The teaching material of the programme comprises case study examples of buildings in Switzerland, Group Projects, material and exercises for individual study and construction site visits. #lifelonginspiration #continuingeducation #seismicevaluationretrofitting

Check out a new section of the SRNL website that highlights the work being done by SRNL to successfully develop, implement and deploy a new approach for robust monitoring of residual contaminants at groundwater sites. The ALTEMIS approach includes incorporating in situ, real-time early warning systems, deploying spatially integrative monitoring methods, and developing modeling approaches to improve the success and quality of monitoring, while reducing overall cost. https://lnkd.in/dTHvg57v
