I'll be sharing a great case history on horizontal drains used for landslide mitigation, co-authored with Kenneth Johnson, PhD, PG, CEG, PE, Evan Garich, P.E., and Orion George, Wednesday Aug 7 at 1:20 pm in plenary session 3. Below is a preview of some of the data used in the geohydrological modeling that I'll dig into.

The AGS is pleased to announce Martin Preene, Technical Director at COFFEY GEOTECHNICS LIMITED will be presenting at the We Need to Talk About Groundwater Conference, which is taking place on 6th November 2024 at ETC. Venues, Manchester. Martin will be presenting on Challenges of Permeability Assessment for Geotechnical Purposes. Permeability (also known as hydraulic conductivity) is a fundamental parameter in the analysis of many geotechnical processes including consolidation, groundwater inflow to excavations and migration of contamination. Unfortunately, permeability is a challenging parameter to assess; even on a site with a simple conceptual model, permeability values within the dataset can vary by several orders of magnitude. This could reflect geological variability, but is often also influenced by limitations in the various permeability testing methods. This presentation will discuss the available methods to assess permeability values, and propose approaches to allow datasets can be used to develop realistic values for use in design. Extracting Multimodal Surface‐Wave Dispersion Curves from Ambient Seismic Noise Using High‐Resolution Linear Radon Transform #SRL Over the past two decades, ambient noise tomography has emerged as a way to image subsurface seismic velocity structures. One key step is to extract surface-wave dispersion curves. In a new study, scientists illustrate the applicability of the high-resolution linear radon transform method (HRLRT) for accomplishing this step. Interested in how it went? The CAS ETH in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting focuses on the seismic design of new structures and the seismic evaluation and retrofitting of existing structures located in Switzerland. The presentation of the optimal modelling strategies, analysis methods and practical engineering solutions for the seismic design and evaluation of structures lies at the core of the programme. Check out a new section of the SRNL website that highlights the work being done by SRNL to successfully develop, implement and deploy a new approach for robust monitoring of residual contaminants at groundwater sites. The ALTEMIS approach includes incorporating in situ, real-time early warning systems, deploying spatially integrative monitoring methods, and developing modeling approaches to improve the success and quality of monitoring, while reducing overall cost. https://lnkd.in/dTHvg57v

The International Conference on Research Infrastructures (ICRI) 2024 served as a key event for the global research infrastructure (RI) community to discuss the role of RIs in tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
