Juneteenth reminds me of the ongoing fight for freedom and equality. In Alzheimer's care, this means addressing disparities affecting underserved communities, particularly those of African descent. Historically, these communities lack access to resources, awareness, and care for Alzheimer’s disease, reflecting systemic inequities. We can bridge these gaps by connecting underserved communities with care options and ensuring new advances reach these communities. As we move toward precision medicine, it is crucial to include diverse populations in clinical research to ensure findings are representative of the U.S. population, especially those bearing a disproportionate burden of these diseases. The scientific community must be accountable for ensuring our research represents all Americans. We must elevate voices and perspectives that challenge exclusionary systems, bringing us closer to a healthier future.

a2 Collective #awardee University of Michigan, UCLA, and Harvard University is developing a groundbreaking project titled ""A Digital Dyadic Coach to Promote Oral Health Self-Care in Older Adults."" This #cohort3 initiative focuses on leveraging #AI and #ReinforcementLearning to improve oral health among older adults, particularly those with Alzheimer's and related dementias (#ADRD). Led by a distinguished team of PIs—Inbal Billie Nahum-Shani, PhD, Vivek Shetty, DDS, Guy Shani, PhD, MBA, and Susan A. Murphy, PhD—this project uses #Wearables and advanced #Software technology to provide personalized coaching and support. The project addresses key areas of need, including mobility, activities of daily living (#ADLs), social and emotional support, resource and care access, and tech adaptations. By collaborating with #massaitc, this initiative exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary research to address critical health challenges faced by the elderly community. Pittsburgh friends!! One week until the WHPAC event. Wondering why you should attend and why you should support the WHPAC? I'll tell you: 💰 Enhance funding for women's health research ($$$ = innovation) 🏥 Expand healthcare access for women of color and rural communities (reducing healthcare disparity helps us all; plus, it's the right thing to do) 🌸 Remove obstacles in maternal health, fertility, and menopause care (if you know me, you know this is a cause I am particularly passionate about) 💡 Advance education and awareness of women's health throughout life (more education = enabling women to advocate more strongly for themselves and improves health outcomes) 💬 Continue the conversation where women's health is at the forefront (because women's health isn't just a women's issue - we all will benefit from lasting economic, social, and health equity benefits) Recently, I listened to a Beyond the Paper Gown podcast with two of WHPAC's founders, Jodi Neuhauser & Liz Powell, where they talk more about the motivation to start the PAC, why it's important, and how you can get involved. The part that stood out to me the most is the framework Liz lays out for how change happens in healthcare: 🤓 Research (and innovation to address the gaps found!) 🏛️ Regulation 💲 Reimbursement Without legislators that recognize the need for increasing funding for research and making changes to regulation to support reimbursement, we won't move the needle on women's health. MindNest Health is a technology platform that delivers evidence-based parent mediated interventions that teach parents, grandparents, and other caregivers skills and techniques to care for children with behavioral issues. The platform uses the same behavioral interventions that are practiced by experts at academic centers. Ensuring #research, #innovation and #artificialintelligence address realities of aging and caregiving, especially when #Alzheimer’s and related dementias are concerned, is *NOT* a no-brainer. (Pun intended).  For the people doing translational science and entrepreneurial work in this area, acknowledging complexity and diversities in market uptake are everyday problems. In 2019 The 5-year NIH/NIA A2 Collective research initiative on Aging and AD/ADRD (Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias) was #designed from the start to incorporate Stakeholder participation as a core element supporting researchers during the awarded Pilots’ testing and development processes. The PennAITech group from the University of Pennsylvania (one of three initiative Administrative Universities) in their December 2024 newsletter includes an article by family caregivers sharing viewpoints of Stakeholder lived experience.  We’re grateful for the inclusion and acknowledgement.  A 5-minute read (pg 15).
