Worlds collided today! I have been reviewing potential grant opportunities for Rua Diagnostics to pursue, and today saw the paragraph pictured below - from the Department of Defense no less. I cannot count how many times I have used the phrases 'differently and disproportionately', or 'sex as a variable' in speaking or writing while I was working at FemHealth Insights. And I can’t express how I feel seeing these words in a non-women's health focused funding announcement from CDMRP with an emphasis on both outcomes and knowledge for women's health. Early detection of disease saves lives but in order to detect disease in different patient populations, we must understand how disease presents in those patient populations. Assuming one size fits all in healthcare has proven to only result in more harm. I am very excited to see what knowledge these new funding initiatives bring us! And Rua will conduct our research with a continued emphasis on ensuring that we include diverse patient populations in all of our studies and always include sex and race as variables in any analysis!!!! #healthequity #diversity #femalehealth #medicalresearch #funding

We're proud to join the Shared Commitment to Public Involvement alongside more than 25 other leading health and research organisations such as the Health Research Authority, the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), NHS England, and Cancer Research UK (CRUK). This pledge aims to raise the standards of health research through stronger and more meaningful engagement with patients and the public. By listening to those with lived experience, we can better understand where we should focus our efforts and improve the way we design and carry out research. Patient impact is central to our work, and we've built strong partnerships with patient communities to ensure we're addressing real unmet needs. This pledge reinforces our commitment to advancing patient and public involvement in translational research. Looking ahead, we're planning to strengthen patient and public involvement with our upcoming patient engagement framework and guiding principles, developed with input from our Patient Advisory Group. These tools will help us engage more effectively with patients and communities to ensure voices with lived experiences are part of our future planning. Read more: https://lnkd.in/exGkPMj6

Today and tomorrow, I’m attending the #HealthBeyondResearch & #InnovationShowcase in New South Wales, hosted by South Western Sydney Local Health District and the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. This year’s theme is ‘Harnessing Diversity,’ and I had the pleasure of listening to A/Professor Mei Ling Yap and Ms Nasreen Kaadan discuss their 'big data approaches' to improving outcomes for culturally diverse people diagnosed with cancer. While their focus was on cancer, one slide on the power of #realworlddata really stood out to me —applicable to all diseases, including #inflammatoryboweldisease (#IBD). It highlighted how real-world data offers insights into the effectiveness of interventions for people often excluded from clinical trials. With large populations, long follow-up, and routinely collected data, real-world data are not only powerful but also #costeffective. So, why aren’t we using these real world data more often? We can’t solely rely on clinical trial data, especially with strict inclusion/exclusion criteria that don’t reflect the real-world population. Real-world data has the potential to #revolutionise how we approach #healthcare. #HealthBeyond #RealWorldData #BigData #IBD #ResearchInnovation #HarnessingDiversity
