David , I agree with your premise . There is a possible reason sales representatives go after the larger volume ,low margin ,low value add opportunities. This strategy may be attributable to ownership; mainly PE ( private equity)owed organizations. Generally these organizations focus on top line sales growth. Top line= massive quantity opportunities with lower margins. The old theory we will sell at low prices and make money on the volume . My opinion a race to the bottom. Or….. Calling on progressive accounts who are working on specialty markets and applications. If you can find organizations that focus on specialty market opportunities ;there is the possibility of higher margins, less competition . In this space , there are fewer competitors . If these organizations move toward this strategy, they need to be prepared. 1. Stronger demmand on R&D and sales representatives 2. Multiple sample iterations 3. Longer sale cycles. If successful, these organizations are going to be taught after by progressive organization who are truly looking for a partner.
