Your next product manager might be… a designer? In smaller teams, multi-skilled hires are a huge advantage. It means people can jump fluidly between 2+ “roles” to fill in gaps and move faster. As someone who’s moved between design & PM, having both collapsed into one role at OpTech.ai has meant iteration cycles between product and design are instant. Write the docs → design the thing. In my product design agency, I also hired for specific combinations of designers with great client management, or product managers with exceptional ability to go from vague brief to wireframe. Where have you seen this to be the most effective in your teams? (Repost, previous one got deleted somehow...)

Every AI job hunting tool I try analyzes my UX, product design, software engineering, and management experience and recommends product management roles. Maybe I should take the hint. - Customer interviews - Competitive analysis - Product strategy - Requirements gathering - Backlog grooming - User research & testing - Coding (full stack) - Writing - Cross-functional collaboration - Leading and mentoring without managing - But also managing :) - And much more I can't think of right now...basically the entire product lifecycle I'm sure the day-to-day of a product manager involves plenty I'm not aware of, but this experience sounds like a solid foundation. Having been an engineer made me a better designer. I tend to think having been an engineer and designer would make me a better product manager. My last major career transition was from engineering to UX. Perhaps it's time to try something new. Any designers out there who've made this jump? Anybody willing to give me a shot? I've enjoyed my break, but I've recharged and it's time to get back to work. #UX #productdesign #softwareengineering #productmanagement #AI #jobhunt

After my first full week at a new job in almost 20 years, a few things stuck out to me. Big change is hard, and SO worth it - I can actually feel the growth and energy that comes from diving into something new and challenging. I missed the small company feel - navigating the entire company in a few calls is such a luxury. Ideas and strategies spread fast (so be careful). Great culture is hard to fake - I was drawn to this role because of people. I had a good feeling while interviewing and the first week exceeded my expectations. Customer-centricity is applicable everywhere - being genuinely curious about customer needs, asking great questions, and implementing new solutions based on those responses is THE WAY. Relationships continue to be the source of results - I’ve spoken with so many people in so many places over the last few weeks. It’s humbling, inspiring, and rewarding all at once. My network has helped me ramp up 5x faster than any onboarding process could ever do. Please ask a favor of me, I hate feeling like I’m in debt! Lastly, we’re currently hiring a Head of Engineering and Senior UX Designer as we accelerate product development. Please tag anyone in your network who might be interested. I'm curious to see if product design is headed towards a hard reset. Here's what I'm seeing and hearing: - AI is reshaping roles: Netflix is offering up to $900k/year for roles like AI PMs. - "Design Engineers" are on the rise: Companies like Attio and Vercel want designers who can code. Smaller shops too. - Hybrid roles are emerging: Framer's experimenting with "Product Activation Lead" positions. In higher demand (according to recruiters like Tom Scott): - Senior ICs capable of high-quality, rapid execution - Hands-on design managers leading small teams - CDO roles at the VP/SVP level In less demand: - UX specialists without visual design skills - Professional design managers - Corporate designers transitioning to startups A huge part of future-proofing the next evolution of your design career is going to come from: 1. Playing with new design material (e.g. spatial, AI, tools) 2. Investing into targetted learning (e.g. courses) 3. Learning net new skills (e.g. tools, business blindspots) 4. Blocking doomsdayers and cynical noise Lots of opportunities ahead to grow, build and create value for the world. Lock in.

We need better ways of evaluating “experience” than just based on titles and how long someone has had those titles. I remember looking for my first UX role like it was yesterday. One day I didn’t have “UX Designer” on my resume and no recruiters would talk to me. The next I did and recruiters pre-emptively called me all the time (even though I had just started a job—which I found strange). It’s no different with UX leadership roles. We have “UX Directors” who are player/coaches with teams of 2 in their first leadership role on one extreme, and others with the same title but lead managers of managers and have orgs of 40 or 50. It’s wild. Same with Seniors, Leads, Managers, and Senior Managers. Not hiring someone who has never held a particular title but who clearly is more than qualified for the role is insanity. A focus on comparable experience is more needed than ever. We need to stop focusing on titles, how long someone has been doing something, & buzzwords on their resume, and instead focus on the skills needed and actual experience putting those skills in practice. The easy way is not usually the best way. Oh, and could we please stop giving out titles that don’t reflect the job duties or experience of the role? It’s only complicating things. #UX #Recruiting #JobTitle

I really, really agree! I also remember my experience while I tried to apply abroad from my own country, and I faced rejection with the reason, 'Why did you stay less than a year in a company?' This repetition problem also forced me sometimes to stay in some rough situations just to reach that at least 1-year goal! But none of those recruiters considered Iran's situation (Unfortunately, due to the many boycotts and lack of good access to the internet, many businesses will suddenly die and lay off their employees), or put any empathy for the worker. Maybe that person did her best to make some changes, but finally, she gave up. I mean, we are not robots with superpowers. I also understand the recruiter's side too. I was in the interviewer position too and know how hard it could be to read thousands of resumes, pass many interviews, and make a final decision. But I really hope one day the true talent and skills become more important than the titles and years. This strategy also encourages many juniors to create fake resumes, which will affect the market so badly in the future. #requirements #requirment #requirementsmanagement #jobhiring #jobposting
